John Michael Beck Taylor (born February 4, 1949), also known as Michael Beck, is an American actor best known for his role in The Warriors (1979) and as Sonny Malone in Xanadu.

Early life

Beck was born in Memphis, Tennessee, as the third of nine children. He attended Memphis University School and then Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, on a football scholarship. He was a Kappa Alpha fraternity student while attending college. He earned his degree in economics and was one of 30 (out of 2,500) applicants selected for London's Central School of Speech and Drama. Camelot (he was King Arthur), Of Mice and Men (he was George Milton), Romeo and Juliet (he was Tybalt), and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are among Beck's stage credits, beginning with college.

Personal life

Carolyn "Cari" Louise Brendel, a composer from Pittsburgh, was married by Beck in September 1980. They have two children and Jesse, a son. Ashley (b. 1983), a daughter, and a son, Ashley (b. 1986 (Japan)

He is a born-again Christian.

Career

Beck is best known for his appearances in The Warriors (1979), Sonny Malone in Xanadu (1980), and Triumphs of a Man Called Horse (1983). He received Razzie Awards for Worst Actor and Worst Supporting Actor, respectively, for his Xanadu and Megaforce roles. Beck has appeared in other films, including Warlords of the 21st Century (1982), Wes Craven's Chiller (1985), Gone to Texas (1986), and Forest Warrior (1996).

In 1978 television miniseries Holocaust, Hans Helms appeared as Hans Helms, and in the CBS police drama Houston Knights (1987–1988), he appeared as Hans Helms. In television shows such as JAG, Walker, Texas Ranger, In the Heat of the Night as the Mars-born terrorist-turned-cyborg assassin Abel Horn (episode "Spider on the Web) and Mr. Jones in the spin-off series Crusade, he appeared as JAG, Walker, and Mr. Jones.

Several audiobooks of John Grisham's novels have been narrated by Beck. Tony Horwitz, A Shadow More Than Light by Michael Connelly, State of the Union by David Callahan, and Bill Clinton's unabridged version of My Life. In 2005, he reprised his role as Swan, lending his voice to the popular video game version of The Warriors.
