In it, Etheridge answered Wieder's questions about why the couple wanted to have children: "I believe one of the many concerns people have about homosexuality is around children." The more gay parents raise good, strong, compassionate people, the better the world will be." Bailey Jean and Beckett gave birth to two children during this time. Melissa Etheridge Career

Early life and career

Etheridge was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, the younger of Elizabeth's two daughters (Williamson), a computer consultant, and John Etheridge, an American Constitution instructor at her alma mater, Leavenworth High School. In August 1991, John Etheridge died.

At the age of eight, Etheridge began guitar lessons. She began to participate in local country music clubs in her teens and graduated from high school in 1979. Etheridge, who was in college at Berklee College of Music, was involved in the Boston club circuit. After three semesters, Etheridge decided to drop out of Berklee and pursue a life in music in Los Angeles.

Career

Etheridge was discovered at Vermie's, a Bar in Pasadena, California. She had made some acquaintances on a women's soccer team, and her new friends came to watch her play. Karla Leopold, married to Bill Leopold, was a musician who worked in the music industry. Bill was encouraged to see Etheridge perform live on television by Karla. He was captivated and became a pivotal piece of Etheridge's career. This, in addition to her appearances in lesbian bars around Los Angeles, culminated in her discovery by Island Records chief Chris Blackwell. She has signed a publishing contract to write songs for films, including the 1986 film Weeds.

She made her stripped-down, self-titled debut in just four days after an unveiled first attempt that was rejected by Island Records as being too polished and glossy. Melissa Etheridge's debut album (1988) was an underground sensation, and her single "Bring Me Some Water" did well on radio and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

It was not well known that Etheridge was a lesbian at the time of the album's release. "People think I'm really sad—or really ill." She stopped in Memphis, Tennessee, to be interviewed for syndicated radio show Pulsebeat—Voice of the Heartland. However, my songs are about the tragedies I have...I have no rage against anyone else." She invited the radio syndication engineer to attend her concert that night. He did and was surprised to discover himself one of the few guys in attendance.

In 1989, Etheridge's second album, Brave and Crazy, was released. Brave and Crazy followed the same musical formula as her eponymous debut; it also received a Grammy nomination. The album reached its high point at No. 1. On the Billboard charts, she debuts at number 22 (equivalent to her first album). Etheridge went on tour after building a loyal fan base, like one of her musical influences, Bruce Springsteen.

Etheridge's third album, Never Enough, was released in 1992. Never Enough's debut on the charts at #21, but she gave Etheridge her first Grammy Award for Female for her single "Ain't It Heavy." At the time, Never Enough was considered a more personal and mature album from Etheridge. With rumors of her sexuality (Etheridge was not out at this time), the album seemed to inadvertently reference these rumors.

Etheridge established a Leavenworth High School performing arts scholarship in honor of her recently deceased father. According to Etheridge, her father bought her first guitar and "would accompany me to bars in the area when I was underage."

Etheridge came out openly as a lesbian in January 1993. Yes I Am, her first album, was released on September 21, 1993. Yes I Am spend 138 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts and peaked at No. 27 and was co-produced with Hugh Padgham. 15. It had two mainstream hits: "Come to My Window" and her first Billboard Top 10 single, "I'm the Only One," which also reached the top of Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. Yes, I Am a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIAA) since 2006, I am a member of the 6th Grand Prix.

Etheridge's second Grammy Award for Female Vocal Performance, Female, for her single "Come to My Window," based on an unsettling scene from Pavarotti's "Yes, Giorgio." She also received two additional accolades in the Best Rock Song category for "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window," losing to Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" on Thursday.

Etheridge was boycotted playing in Colorado in 1993 due to Amendment 2's passage.

She was also honoured by VH-1 in 1994 for her work with L.A. Shanti, the AIDS group. She emphasized the presence with a rendition of "I'm the Only One" and a duet with Sammy Hagar addressing The Rolling Stones' song "Honky Tonk Woman" during a televised performance.

"If I Wanted To," the album's fifth track, "If I Wanted To," debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1 in February 1995. The 1995 was the first single appearance in a single.

Etheridge's earlier albums' success, which led to increased sales. Melissa Etheridge earned a RIAA Platinum badge in 1995, while Never Enough received a RIAA Platinum award.

The sequel to Yes I Am by Etheridge was a hit (1995). Critics were not as enthusiastic about Etheridge's prior recordings as it was. Your Little Secret, which features a lead single of the same name, is the highest-charting album of Etheridge's career, despite reaching No. 1 in the United States. 6 on the Billboard album charts; however, the album debuted just 41 weeks on the chart. "I Want to Come Over" (Billboard #22, RPM #12) and "Where to Go" (Billboard #40) were two Top 40 hits, with "I Want to Come Over" and "Nowhere to Go" (Billboard #40) earning a RIAA accolade of 2nd platinum.

In 1996, Etheridge received an ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award. When her first two children Bailey (1997) and Beckett (1998) were born, she took a long break from the music industry to concentrate on her family. "Sin Tener A Donde Ir (Nowhere to Go)" is also available on the AIDS charity album Silencio=Muerte, produced by the Red Hot Organization.

With the introduction of Breakdown in October 1999, Etheridge returned to the charts. The Breakdown reached a high point at No. 1. 12 on the Billboard charts and 18 weeks in the charts are listed. Despite this, Breakdown was the only album of Etheridge's career to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album (losing to Santana's Supernatural).
