In 2017, De Ligt made his debut for the Netherlands at the age of 17, making him the youngest player to start for the national team since 1931. He featured for the side at UEFA Euro 2020.

Matthijs De Ligt Career

Club career

When he was nine years old from his hometown club in Abcoude, just south of Amsterdam, De Ligt joined the Ajax youth academy. At first, the youth academy felt he was too young and out of shape, but he was given the opportunity to grow in the academy and continued to demonstrate his talent.

In an Eerste Divisie match against FC Emmen, he made his debut for Jong Ajax on August 8th, 2016. He was in the full game. De Ligt appeared in 17 matches for Jong Ajax throughout the season.

In a cup match against Willem II on September 21, De Ligt made his debut for Ajax's senior team. He scored from a corner after 25 minutes, making him the second-youngest goalscorer ever behind Clarence Seedorf; Ajax won the game 5–0. De Ligt had been promoted to the senior squad by Ajax's Twitter announcement on October 24th.

After being promoted, De Ligt quickly re-signed and played in 11 league matches and nine in the Europa League. When he took on Manchester United in the 2017 UEFA Europa League Final on May 24, he became the youngest player ever (17 years and 285 days old) to compete in a major European final.

De Ligt became a first-team starter after selling Davinson Sánchez to Tottenham Hotspur in August 2017. After suffering an injury to team captain Jol Veltman, he was named the youngest captain of Ajax in March 2018.

De Ligt played in 37 games in all competitions and scored three goals. He appeared in all of his 31 league games and played 90 minutes in just one of them (he was forced to leave early in the 33rd minute against SBV Vitesse due to an injury). De Ligt was linked to several of Europe's top clubs due to his Ajax performances.

De Ligt was the first defender to win the Golden Boy award on December 17, 2018. In a match against Real Madrid on February 13, 2019, De Ligt became the youngest ever captain in a Champions League knockout game at 19 years and 186 days old. In a 0–3 Klassieker victory over Feyenoord in the Dutch national cup on Sunday, he played his 100th official game for Ajax, becoming the youngest Ajax player to reach this milestone.

For the first time since the 1996-1997 edition of the tournament, De Ligt scored the winning goal in the Champions League quarter-final against Juventus on April 16, 2019. In addition, his goal made him the youngest Dutch player to score in the knockout stages since Nordin Wooter in 1996, making him the second-youngest defender to score after Jol Matip.

De Ligt signed for Serie A champions Juventus on a five-year deal for a €75 million contract, plus additional charges of €10.5 million, on July 18, 2019. In a 4–3 home victory over Napoli in Serie A on August 31, he made his official debut for the club. In a 1–0 away victory over Torino, a cross-city rival, in the Derby della Mole, on November 3rd, he scored his first for the club in the Derby della Mole.

De Ligt signed for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on a five-year deal, potentially increasing to €77 million in add-ons as a result. In a 7–0 home victory over Bochum on August 21, he scored his first Bundesliga goal.

International career

De Ligt made his Dutch national team debut in a 2–0 away defeat to Bulgaria in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier match. Despite having only started two league games for Ajax, Danny Blind, the national team's coach, called De Ligt up for the national team. He was the youngest player to join the national team since 1931 at the age of 17.

In all four group matches against Germany and France, De Ligt started and played 90 minutes, qualifying for the inaugural Nations League Finals. He scored a header against England on June 5th as his team secured a spot in the final, where the Netherlands will be defeated 0–1 by Portugal.

In the UEFA Euro 2020 round of 16 against the Czech Republic, the Netherlands later conceded two goals and were barred from the competition after he was dismissed from the tournament on June 27th.

Bayern Munich beat Lazio 3-0 to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals, keeping his hopes of a trophy alive after losing in the first leg. Harry Kane scored twice to help Bayern Munich advance to the Champions League quarter-finals

3-0 LAZIO, BAYERN MUNICH, (agg 3-1) - KIERAN GILL: Harry Kane's 50th and 51st goals in Europe clinched a priceless Champions League comeback for Bayern Munich, with the Englishman ensuring he does not lift the first trophy of all in his first season in Bavaria. However, Kane made sure that their season didn't come to an end in March at the Allianz Arena, where they are still reeled by their blundering Bundesliga title defense. Bayern lost by a single goal from the first leg, leading to the announcement that Thomas Tuchel would step down this summer. On Tuesday, there was talk of him being pushed sooner if elimination was announced here.

Frenkie de Jong, a Barcelona actor, retaliates on Man United's transfer links, and slams claims that he makes £34 million a year at Barcelona as 'lies'

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 21, 2024
Frenkie de Jong's attack on the media and coverage of him and Barcelona over transfer links was lacking no bones. After his spectacular participation in the infamous Ajax Champions League run of 2018-19, the Dutch midfielder joined Barcelona in 2019, off the back of which he and Matthijs De Ligt earned big moves. However, despite being a regular contributor to Nou Camp, De Jong has been linked with moves away from the club, most commonly to Manchester United.

Donny van de Beek, the flop, has 'offers himself to Barcelona', with injured actor Gavi out for the remainder of the season; Juventus has eyed a loan-to-buy contract for the out-of-favour Dutchman's out-of-favour Dutchman's out-of-favour Dutchman's out-of-favour Dutchman's out-of-favour Dutchman's out-of-favour Dutchman'

Donny van de Beek has been linked with a departure from Manchester United ahead of the transfer window, with the perennially out-of-favour Dutchman now reportedly requesting Barcelona. After playing for Ajax in their infamous Champions League run in 2018-19, van de Beek emerged as one of Europe's most exciting young midfielders after beating Real Madrid and Juventus. Van de Beek stayed on another season before leaving for Man United, compatriots Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt.
