Tyler Roberts Career

Club career

West Brom decided to enroll Roberts for their academy when he was just seven years old after he saw him playing for Tredworth Tigers at a Gloucester Festival. Roberts was named on West Brom's bench for the first time on the final day of the 2014–15 season against Arsenal, after he went on to represent the club at the age group level. However, he did not make it to the field. Following Roberts' selection in the squad, Match of the Day magazine named him as one of the 20 wonder-kids to watch out for in 2016. Roberts signed his first professional deal with West Brom on January 14, just two days after his 17th birthday, putting pen to paper on a 2+12-year deal. Jonathan Leko, a fellow Albion academy graduate, made his Premier League debut for the club on the final day of the 2015–16 season in a 1–1 draw with Liverpool. Roberts was arrested for a rash challenge on Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson just shy of going back to work. Roberts was only the second player born in 1999 to play in the Premier League following teammate Leko's departure the month before.

Roberts signed Oxford United's basement on a six-month loan contract until January 2017. Chris Maguire came off the bench for the club's debut in a 1–1 draw with Chesterfield on the first day of the 2016–17 season. In Oxford's 1–0 victory over Birmingham, his League Cup debut came the following week when he came back to play as an extra-time substitute. In a 4–2 win over League Two club Exeter City in the 2016–17 EFL Trophy, he scored his first goal for the club and his first professional goal of his career. In a 5–0 victory over Merstham of the Isthmian League on November 5th, Roberts made his FA Cup debut on his first appearance and scored on his first FA Cup appearance. After a 1–1 draw in the second round of the EFL Trophy a month later, he scored the winning shot in a shootout against Southend United on December 6th.

Later that month, Oxford boss Michael Appleton lodged a plea to West Brom to extend Roberts' loan term until the end of the season. However, Roberts signed Shrewsbury Town, a fellow League One side, on loan until the end of the season on January 17th. He made his club debut four days later over Oldham Athletic in a 1–0 league victory. In a 2–1 victory over Bury, Roberts scored his first goal for the club and first in league football on February 4th. Roberts suffered a hamstring injury in a 2–1 loss to Millwall, bringing his Shrewsbury tenure to an end. With four goals and two assists for the club, they barely escaped relegation.

Roberts left West Brom on loan once more on August 25, 2017, joining Walsall in League One. On his debut against Bradford City, he scored one goal and assisted another, assisting Walsall in a 3–3 draw. He went on to score five goals in 17 appearances before being recalled by West Brom at the half-way point of the season.

Roberts' return to West Brom was short-lived, however, as the signing of Daniel Sturridge on loan from Liverpool restricted his first team prospects even more. As a result, on the last day of the January 2018 transfer window, he signed for Leeds United on a four-and-a-half contract for an undisclosed fee, potentially increasing to £4 million depending on terms. Roberts was expected to make his debut in the middle of February after recovering from a minor injury that he suffered with when he first arrived at the club. However, new club boss Paul Heckingbottom revealed on Tuesday that he cracked his shin bone after returning to training and would be barred for several weeks. Due to the injury, he missed the remainder of the season.

Roberts made his unofficial debut as a second-half substitute against Southend United in a pre-season friendly. He made his full debut against Bolton Wanderers on August 14th, when he played for Leeds in an EFL Cup match against Bolton Wanderers. In a 3–0 victory over Preston North End, he made his league debut in a 1-1 draw with Millwall and scored his first goals for the club three days later, scoring a brace. Patrick Bamford was aided twice by him in a 4–0 triumph over former West Bromwich Albion, with Roberts named man of the match in an attacking midfielder role.

He was one of three players nominated for the club's Young Player Of The Season award alongside Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke, but Clarke lost out as Clarke took the award at the club's annual function.

Leeds played 32 games in all leagues, after Leeds finished third place in the regular season after losing by three games to seventh-placed Derby County on April 19, 2015, but Roberts did not return to action until December 19th, the final games of the season, with three games remaining. Despite winning by 11-0 at Pride Park and extending the aggregate lead to the home leg at Elland Road, Leeds lost 4–2 in a match that saw both teams lose to 10 men and Derby against Aston Villa.

Since recovering from knee surgery in May 2019, the Roberts missed all of 2019-20 pre-season games and the start of the 2019-20 season. He recovered from injury against Charlton Athletic on September 28, 2019, before scoring his first goal of the season against Queens Park Rangers in a 2–0 victory on November 2nd. However, Roberts sustained an injury against Reading on November 26th, keeping him out of the Leeds side for a month before returning from injury as a replacement in Leeds' 5–4 victory over Birmingham City on December 29, 2019, but he sustained a hamstring injury in the same game. In a 1–0 loss at home to Wigan Athletic, the injury kept him out of the team until early February, when he returned as a second-half substitute. Roberts made his first brace of the season and his second as a Leeds player on February 29, 2020, as his 67th-minute replacement for striker Patrick Bamford with Leeds 2–0 ahead of Hull City. Roberts appeared in eight of the club's last nine games, scoring once as they were promoted to the Premier League following their suspension of the Championship season.

In the first match of the season against Liverpool on September 12, 2019, Roberts made his debut for Leeds in the Premier League's first match of the season against Liverpool on September 12, 2020, coming as a replacement in the 4–3 loss to the reigning champions. Roberts scored his first goal of the season against Southampton on May 18, 2021, scoring after coming on as a replacement in the 2–0 victory at St Mary's.

Roberts, the narrator of Elland Road, has signed a new three-year contract before the summer of 2024.

Roberts joined Queens Park Rangers on loan from the 2022–23 season in 2022. On his first appearance in an EFL Cup tie against Charlton Athletic on August 20, 2022, he scored on his QPR debut against Charlton Athletic.

International career

Roberts later decided to play for Wales rather than England, his country of birth, although he was born in England, and while two of his grandparents are Welsh, qualifying for selection.

He led Wales' U16 team to glory in the Victory Shield in 2015, scoring in the final against Northern Ireland. The result was Wales' first outright victory in the competition since the 1948–49 edition. He returned to the U16 side in November and was part of the team that retained the Victory Shield trophy after being trained with the senior team in between.

Following the conclusion of the League One season, he was drafted in Robert Page's squad for the 2017 Toulon Tournament in May 2017. Roberts made one more appearance against France in the tournament opener against Ivory Coast after making his debut on the team against Ivory Coast, as Wales were eliminated in the group stage. In a 3–0 victory over Switzerland, he made his debut for the under-21 team on September 1st and scored the first goal.

Roberts and Liverpool winger Harry Wilson were called up by Wales boss Chris Coleman in May 2015 to train with the senior squad. He was voted a stand-by player for Wales' World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in March 2017.

When he was chosen in Ryan Giggs' squad for the country's UEFA Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Denmark in August 2018, he received his first full call up. In a 4–1 win, his debut followed him on September 6th, emerging as a second-half replacement for Gareth Bale. As the Republic of Ireland were defeated 1–0 in Dublin later this month, Roberts was handed his first Wales start in January. He was selected for the Wales squad for the postponed UEFA Euro 2020 tournament in May 2021.

After Luis Diaz' goal was wrongly disallowed, Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham would not have allowed Liverpool to score because the "defective system doesn't exist."

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 6, 2023
Ange Postecoglou has denied rumors that his side may have allowed Liverpool to score an uncontested goal after Luis Diaz's goal was wrongly disallowed against them last week. Spurs beat the Reds 2-1 in the 96th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a tumultuous match that culminated in two tense red cards for Liverpool. Diaz's first half strike was called off after Simon Hooper had dismissed him as offside, but VAR acknowledged the Colombian as onside but mistakenly beholding the goal.

Around £5 million, a former Man United starlet's return to Premier League was scheduled for about £5 million

TOM COLLOMOSSE: One of the clubs to have expressed an interest in Chong is Tom Collod, who joined the Blues from United for £1.5 million last year following a fruitful loan spell. Despite the imminent arrival of new owners Tom Wagner and the American investment company Knighthead in Birmingham, the city's forthcoming campaign is expected to be run on a tight budget, with boss John Eustace alerting that there is no room for manoeuvre. Jobe Bellingham, the younger brother of England actor Jude, has already joined Sunderland for about £3 million, and Chong's departure would increase the coffers even more.

Leeds to ramp up search for a new manager this week with Parker, Farke and Vieira among candidates

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 19, 2023
Leeds United will sharpen their attention this week on a new manager, with the need for a candidate that has Premier League and Championship experience. Leeds would prefer an appointment that did not require compensation following their relegatement from the Premier League. Ex coach Carlos Corberan would appear to be ruled out by this measure.
