The web designer, who is 70, is said to have arrived at Stansted Airport in Essex over the weekend to board a Ryanair flight for a few days at a friend's home abroad. And though his passport did not expire for another nine months, staff at the low-cost airline's check-in counter refused to allow him to board the plane. One of his friends tells me, 'Tim was really upset and chastised.' Because he didn't have the weekend away that he was looking forward to, he was irritable about Ryanair.' Hanbury seems not to have known that British passports are no longer than ten years old when used to travel to the European Union, which means travelers must check the passport date rather than the date it expires.
