Personal life
Burnside grew up on a ranch in Pensacola, Florida. His family raised chickens, cows, horses, and pigs.
Burnside has written about toxic masculinity: "All of the things I want to do and the jobs I want to do are about pushing the boundaries or blurring the lines of what it means to be a man." I think manhood as a system has caused a lot of pain and tragedy in our world" and acknowledges the importance of Pose in representing LGBTQ people of color. "I am so confident in my truth and speak openly about my experience" for National Coming Out Day 2019. He has referred to bell hooks, James Baldwin, Eckhart Tolle, and Marianne Williamson, as well as gospel music being a part of going to church with him.
Burnside referred to his identity as "queer, not gay" in a Men's Health magazine interview in September 2020, saying that he has had "relationships — romantic and sexual — with women as well as men," and that "for me, queerness is about discovering that I am not restricted by gender specifics," not gay or straight."
Career
Burnside got his first break at age 12 when he appeared in "3D" with 2 of his cousins and managed by his mother, touring with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Rihanna, and appearing in venues including Madison Square Garden and the Nokia Theater. After ten years of being a man, he felt restricted by fronting a boy band and wanting to investigate arts that weren't traditionally feminine: "The things that attracted my attention didn't necessarily fit with my family's or society's conception of what it meant to be a man." ... I can still be a male and perform Mozart or take a ballet class, but it does not have to do with anything other than I wanted to attend a ballet class." As a result, he joined the CAP21 conservatory for a vocal major, moved to New York City, and took acting and dance classes, as well as writing from The New School.
Burnside appeared in the Tupac-inspired musical Holler if Ya Hear Me on Broadway in 2014, where he appeared as Anthony, as he appeared as Burnside on CAP21. Burnside was also a member of NBC's High Maintenance, HBO's High Maintenance, and BeBe Winans' musical Born For This in both Atlanta and Washington, D.C., while learning Burnside.
Burnside has also appeared on award-winning short The Jump and as a theatrical director on Hold Up The Light at the non-profit Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. He has also taught performing arts workshops and spoken at colleges about how studying the performing arts can be enriching and aiding young people in discovering their own way of self-expression.
Burnside co-founder Billy Porter and Ryan Jamaal Swain performed at a benefit concert on July 23, 2018, raising funds for GLSEN, learning about his coming out story and speaking with former Vibe editor Emil Wilbekin about the benefits of safe spaces for LGBTQ people.
The musical single Heaven, starring British singer Daley, was released in July 2021 as a symbol of LGBTQ love in the same period as the final episode of Pose was broadcast. Burnside was included in the fourth episode of the anthology TV series American Horror Stories by Murphy&Falchuk in the same month. He appeared on Broadway for the seventh Afroamerican leads of the show Thoughts of a Colored Man in Fall 2021.
