Matthew DeVries (born January 28, 1977) is the former rhythm guitarist in Chimaira and the former bassist in the metal band Fear Factory.
He, Robert Arnold (the lead guitarist), and Mark Hunter (the lead singer) wrote a substantial number of the band's songs during his time in Chimaira.
DeVries appeared on "All Star Sessions" and "Constitution Down" as a guitarist with Joey Jordison's band "Annihilation by the Hands of God." When DeVries was on tour with Chimaira in 2003, he was humiliated badly in Liverpool.
The assault was unprovoked and had nothing to do with DeVries' membership in Chimaira or Chimaira's general style of music.
The band's next two performances, in Dublin, Ireland, and Belfast, Northern Ireland, were as expected, and the band appeared as a four-piece, though Devries recovered in hospital.
After that for the remainder of the UK/European Tour, he was able to join them. In March 2011, Devries, a Chimaira guitarist, and former Chimaira drummer Kevin Talley were all confirmed as the touring bassist for Six Feet Under. Matt DeVries left Chimaira after Chimaira Christmas '11 for 'personal reasons.' He joined Fear Factory, an industrial metal band, in February 2012, swapping Byron Stroud for bassist.
In May 2015, he left the band and was replaced by former Static-X and current Ministry bassist Tony Campos. He began performing as the bassist for Unearth in February 2014. On the last 2013 leg of their Resolution Tour, John Campbell from Lamb of God had to cancel due to a family emergency. On June 21, 2017, Chimaira announced that a one-off reunion show would be held on December 30, 2017.
Matt later revealed it on his social media pages. DeVries' endorsement by ESP Guitars is included in his LTD MFA-600 signature model.
It features an alder Viper body, a maple neck with an ebony fingerboard, a TonePros Tune-O-Matic bridge, locking tuners, and one EMG 81 pickup.
When playing bass in Unearth and Fear Factory, he would use LTD B-series 5-string bass guitars but eventually switched to Ibanez Soundgear 5-string bass guitars in 2013.
