Jason Newsted Life

Jason Curtis Newsted (born March 4, 1963) is an American metal musician best known for his work with Metallica from October 1986 to his abrupt departure in January 2001. He was a member of Flotsam and Jetsam before Metallica.

Since Metallica, has been associated with Echobrain, Ozzy Osbourne, Voivod, and has been a member of the band Newsted from 2012 to 2014.

Voivod used the pseudonym Jasonic, which also appears in the name of his music publishing firm.

He is also the creator of the Chophouse Record store and a label based in California.

Walnut Creek, California, is home to a newsted family.

Early life

Jason Curtis Newsted was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. He has two older brothers and a younger sister. He grew up on a farm and was given the opportunity to look after animals at the age of six. He was sent to look after hundreds of chickens and rabbits. "It's where I learned about life – seeing a baby cow born right in front of your eyes when you're eight years old is so thrilling...I was raised to be a strong, pure American farmer boy," author Paul Stenning said.

One of his brothers is a trumpet player, and his mother teaches piano, and another of his brothers plays trumpet. As an infant, he was introduced to music as a child, enjoying the record collections of his older brothers. His first instrument, a guitar, was started at 9 years old, but after listening to Gene Simmons of Kiss, he switched to bass at 14.

Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath is cited as the source of his clout. Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Peter Baltes of Acceptance, Geddy Lee of Rush, Rob Grange of Ted Nugent, and Bill Church of Montrose are among his influences.

Personal life

In 1988, Newsted married Judy Talbert, but the couple divorced in 1991 amid the Black Album's recordings. He is currently married to Nicole Leigh Smith, whom he wed in October 2012. She was his girlfriend of 11 years, to whom he refers as the "love of my life." Nicole, an artist herself, suggested trying painting while still his girlfriend. Newsted is now encouraged to "go forward with his art."

Newsted was wounded while trying to capture a falling bass amp head (which, according to him, was the bass amp that was used to record Metallica, Load, and Reload). The accident resulted in a torn anterior labrum in his left shoulder and a rotator cuff and biceps tear in the right. He was scheduled for immediate surgery and underwent a lengthy recovery process. He was unable to play at this time and began to express himself through painting. He was playing his bass again on January 4, 2007.

After taking such drugs from his time in Metallica to deal with neck pains, Newsted later reported that he had become addicted to painkillers, but without knowing the risks. Following his shoulder injury, Newsted's painkiller use became a problem, but Newsted said he hadn't used it since about 2010.

Jason Newsted Career

Career

On their 1986 album Doomsday for the Deceiver, he appeared on bass for Flotsam and Jetsam early in Newsted's music career. The bulk of the song's lyrics were composed by Newsted.

Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton died on September 27, 1986, while riding the European leg of the Damage, Inc. Tour. Following Burton's death, the group began looking for a new bassist. They considered and auditioned over 50 musicians, including Greg Christian of Testament, Gene Gilfen of Blind Illusion, Mel Sanchez of Abattoir, Mike Jastremski of Heathen, Troy Gregory, Les Claypool, David Ellefson of Megadeth, and several others. Newsted was the last in line, but he ended up winning the competition.

In a 2015 interview, Newsted said he knew about Metallica's proposal to open for Ozzy Osbourne's tour at the time. Newsted also sourced the band's setlist, researched it, and told drummer Lars Ulrich that he knew all of these songs, much to Ulrich's surprise. Metallica welcomed Newsted back and told him that he had been chosen to fill the bassist role two days later. Both of Burton's parents were involved in the decision to choose Newsted. During the announcement, Burton's parents were present. Burton's mother hugged him close after the band broke the news to Newsted, saying, "You are the one." Please, be safe.

On November 8, 1986, Newsted's first live performance with Metallica was at the Country Club in Reseda, California. On The $5.98 E.P., Metallica's first studio visit was recorded. Garage Days Re-Revisited in 1987, in which he was credited as 'Master J Newkid' in the liner notes. ...And Justice for All (1988), the band's first studio album, was criticized for its undermixed bass guitar and thin tone. This was deliberate on the part of Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, according to Newsted, although Ulrich and Hetfield were dissatisfied with the album's production. They claim that the majority or all of Newsted's bass lines closely followed the rhythm guitar lines to the point of being indistinguishable from each other. However, Steve Thompson, who produced the album, claims that Ulrich was to blame for the inaudible bass and unusual drums. When Ulrich suggested that Thompson be able to remove himself from his mixing duties, Thompson wanted to be freed of his duties, but Thompson was refused to leave and was not given the majority of the criticism due to the poor sound quality of the film. Despite this, the album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200, with the band predicting a lot more success.

Metallica (1991"), the best-selling Metallica album to date, as well as Load (1996), Reload (1997), and Garage Inc (1998). Live Shit: Binge & Purge and Cunning Stunts, 1993 and 1997 respectively, appeared in 1993 and 1997, as did the live concert S&M in 1999. In 2000, Newsted's last studio appearance, he appeared on "I Disappear" on the track "I Disappear."

Newsted also sang backing vocals on a number of Metallica songs during his time in Metallica. He would often sing portions of "Creeping Death," "Whiplash," and "Seek & Destroy" and "Seek & Destroy," and "Seek & Destroy" during tours, and he was often leading in most songs for three shows at the Summer Sanitarium Tour, where Hetfield was recovering from injury.

He is best known for his bass solo, which featured excerpts from Newsted's "My Friend of Misery" (which Newsted had written as an instrumental) and bass parts from his former band, Flotsam and Jetsam.

He has co-written three Metallica albums and has been praised for two bass solos on live broadcasts: he has co-written three Metallica songs and is best known for two bass solos.

("Bass/Guitar Doodle"), a medley of My Friend of Misery and Welcome Home (Sanitarium), contains an extended version of My Friend of Misery (1991), which was originally intended as a leader on "Metallica" (1991), before the band decided against an instrumental on the album.

On November 30, 2000, he appeared at the My VH1 Music Awards for his last live show as Metallica's bassist.

During a meeting between the members of Metallica in January 2001, Newsted suggested that the band take a year off from work and concentrate on his side-project Echobrain. When the other band members (specifically James Hetfield) turned down Newsted's plans, he opted to leave the band. Newsted left on January 17, as preparations for the band's eighth studio album were being made. According to Newsted's biography, his departure was based on "personal and emotional reasons, as well as the physical harm I have done to myself over the years while performing the music that I adored." During a Playboy interview with Metallica, Newsted revealed that he wanted to debut an Echobrain album. "When someone does a side project, it takes away from Metallica's strengths," Hetfield said. Hetfield's contributions to other musical outlets were cited in Hetfield's argument. "My name isn't on those records, and I'm not out trying to sell them," Hetfield answered, pondering questions like "Where will it end?"

Does he start touring with it?

Does he sell shirts?

Is it his band?"

Newsted's departure from Metallica, along with Hetfield's decision to go to rehab a few months later, could have resulted in the band's breakup. The band finished recording St. Anger, with record producer Bob Rock filling the bass slot after Hetfield rejoined Metallica. In 2003, Robert Trujillo became the band's new bassist.

Newsted has claimed that he never regretted leaving the band. "I tell you very honestly, one billion percent, I have never regretted leaving Metallica," he said in a 2009 interview. It was the right thing for everybody. It was the right thing to do for the camp. That's it. I've never told anyone that I wanted to go back or something like that—not once. I made up my mind. It was not a simple thing to do, but it was something I had to do. I was excited about it before pulling the trigger, but I haven't looked back. The past is where it is supposed to be." In the film Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, it was mentioned that there had been a rumor that Newsted might resurface, but it hasn't happened, beyond a brief appearance on the 30th anniversary shows.

Despite his release from Metallica, Newsted remains close to the other band members. In Cleveland, Ohio, Newsted joined Metallica for its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, 2009. "Master of Puppets," "Enter Sandman," and "Train Kept A-Rollin'" were among the event's highlights, as Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett, Robert Trujillo, and Robert Trujillo, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Ron Wood, and Flea performed three songs—including "Master of Puppets," "Enter Sandman" and "Train Kept A-Rollin'"; Newsted reunited with Metallica on December 7, 9, 2009, and performed many songs with the band, Trujillo, and, in some cases, other guest musicians. As Newsted took the stage, hetfield recalled how the fans "lit up," cheering and saluting the audience.

On December 16, 2013, Newsted extended on previous comments regarding his departure from Metallica and said that James Hetfield's investigation into Echobrain was being discouraged by him, but that "other arrangements can be made." "And so they had told me, very convincingly, 'This is a great record, we've been playing it in the office,'" Newsted said, "This kid has a good reputation, and it's all I've heard. Let's do something with this.' That's what they told me, and then James Hetfield found out about it and was not happy. He was, I think, straight out to put the kibosh on the whole deal because it would somehow impact Metallica's eyes, since now the bosses were involved in something that had nothing to do with him." "I have no idea what [Hetfield] was thinking other than safeguarding what he adored, as he does; it's his thing." He protects what he loves but finds it too difficult, as he describes himself. If you want to protect it too much, squeeze it too hard. I was curious where I was coming from. 'Your latest venture is amazing, we'd like to help you with it,' the people who counted on for 15 years to help me with my career, assist Metallica, take care of my money, and do all of those things.' After James learned about it, the boss calls me back a few days later – 'We're not going to be able to help you with the Echobrain thing.'

Ulrich admitted that Newsted's departure put a huge dent on Metallica, and that his presence was ignored.

Hetfield also revealed that the initial writing sessions without Newsted were unsatisfying, and that "the music was not all it should have been."

Newsted joined Echobrain in 2004 and the group disbanded a year later, after releasing three studio albums.

In 2002, Newsted formed Voivod, a Canadian thrash metal band. He was also Trujillo's replacement in Osbourne's band at Ozzfest 2003, which also included Voivod as a Second Stage performer. Both Osbourne and Newsted expressed excitement in writing an album together, with Osbourne comparing Newsted to "a young Geezer Butler" in an MTV interview. This, however, would not come to fruition as Newsted left Osbourne after leaving tour duties in late 2003. Rob Zombie bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson will replace him shortly.

Vivod, Newsted, who appeared on Voivod before his participation in Rock Star Supernova, a supergroup formed by reality television show Rock Star Supernova in 2006.

Denis Bélanger (vocals), Denis D'Amour (guitar), and Michel Langevin (drums) were among Voivod's four founding members' fourth iterations, with Newsted on bass guitar and Denis D'Amour (guitar). D'Amour died on August 26, 2005, at the age of 45, as a result of colon cancer complications. The record Katorz (a phonetic spelling of quatorze, the French word for fourteen) was created in July 2006 and was based on riffs discovered on D'Amour's laptop.

Newsted performed "all the bass tracks" on their new album Infini, which was released on June 23, 2009. Voivod's original bass player, Jean-Yves Thériault (Blacky), was reunited with the band for a short period of time before he departed permanently.

In the search for a lead singer, Supernova formed the basis of the CBS television show Rock Star's second season. The show premiered on MSN on Monday, July 3, 2006, with an Internet exclusive weekly episode, and premiered on CBS on July 5. Votes were cast via the website. Lukas Rossi was named the winner on September 13, 2006.

Newsted became interested in the work of artists such as Jean Fautrier, Pablo Picasso, and Jean-Michel Basquiat thanks to Lars Ulrich's passion for collecting art. Newsted, a painter from Metallica, began painting as a hobby after leaving Metallica. He is a natural artist and has exhibited art around the country.

Newsted found solace in painting while recovering from his shoulder injury in 2006. Over the last half a decade, Newsted has created a number of major original works of art. "From making crazy and colorful music to creating colorful and vivid paintings," Newsted says. At Mica & Co. in San Francisco, his first gallery show opened on May 4, 2010.

Newsted, together with his former Metallica bandmates James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett, as well as Ray Burton, the father of late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, was on April 4, 2009. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio, he appeared with the band alongside current bassist Robert Trujillo.

It was his first appearance with the band in almost a decade, the band's last appearance together at the Shrine Auditorium in November 2000. Both Newsted and Trujillo performed onstage at the same time, which was the first for the band.

In October 2010, Newsted, guitarist Ian Gillan, second guitarist Mikko Lindström of HIM, and drummer Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden formed a supergroup with guitarist Ian Gillan and former keyboardist Jon Lord from Deep Purple, guitarist Jon Lord from Deep Purple, guitarist Ian Gillan, guitarist Jon Lord from Deep Purple, guitarist Jon Lord of HIM, and drummer Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden. "Out of My Mind" by the band, WhoCares, was a charity single released in the United Kingdom. As of May 6, 2011, the charity single also features a track titled "Holy Water" and is available as a digital download or CD format.

With drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. and guitarist Jessie Farnsworth, Newsted formed his own band called Newsted in December 2012, with Staind guitarist Mike Mushok joining later this year. On January 8, 2013, the band released a four-song EP called Metal.

On August 6, 2013, Newsted unveiled Heavy Metal Music, the company's debut album. As of September 15, 2014, Jason Newsted's website went into inactive, with just a brief announcement that as of September 15, 2014, he was no longer on any social media pages. The Newsted official website has been deactivated as of 2018.

He ceased touring with Newsted due to other musical passions, as well as the band's inability. "It cost me an awful lot of money to bring the Newsted band around to the 22 countries we visited," he says.

After being out of the public eye for two years, Newsted formed Jason Newsted and the Chophouse Band in August 2016 and had numerous performance dates throughout the fall.

The band (with Newsted on acoustic guitar and lead vocals) appeared on the Woody Guthrie classic "This Land Is Your Land."

Following David Ellefson's dismissal of original bassist David Ellefson's dismissal, there was rumors that Newsted would return to tour and replace him in Megadeth in 2021. Nicole, the wife of Newsted's husband, had denied any chances that he would have accepted the position shortly after the rumors began circulating on May 30th.

Despite Newsted's claiming that he had the physical fitness to perform again, he was subsequently unable to commit to extensive touring due to persistent back and shoulder pains.
