Mark August Stoermer (born June 28, 1977) is an American musician and songwriter.

He is best known as the bass guitarist and occasional rhythm guitarist for the rock band The Killers, with whom he has released five studio albums. Stoermer has released three solo albums, Another Life in 2011, Dark Arts in 2016, and Filthy Apes and Lions in 2017.

Stoermer appeared on tour with The Smashing Pumpkins in support of the band's ninth studio album, Monuments to an Elegy (2014), and Howling Bells' third studio album, The Loudest Engine (2011).

Early life

Mark August Stoermer was born in Houston, Texas, to a German Australian father who was a surgeon and a big band-style musician, as well as an American mother who was a nurse. When Stoermer was three years old, they migrated to Las Vegas.

Stoermer graduated in 1995 from Chaparral High School, where he performed trumpet in the jazz ensemble. His early musical influences included hip hop bands like Public Enemy and N.W.A.A., as well as later rock bands such as Nirvana, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd. Stoermer played lead guitar for a number of local bands, including Habit Rouge and the Negative Ponies. Stoermer served as a medical courier before the Killers were signed. At UNLV, Stoermer also studied philosophy and music.

Career

Stoermer met Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, who were playing as an early version of the Killers, while playing guitar with the Negative Ponies. He was a fan of the band's distinctive sound and was often present at the band's gigs. "They even asked me to join the band as a guitarist because, at least according to Dave, they wanted to build a five-piece, perhaps more like the Strokes with a keyboard." "I was first asked to be a second guitar player, and I casually mentioned that I also play bass." Dave called me back one day." He was offered the opportunity to play for the band's permanent bass player in September 2002, and he accepted and completed the band's lineup, as did Ronnie Vannucci Jr. The band's six albums reached No. 1 in the country. The band received seven GRAMMY Award nominations and seven BRIT Award nominations on the United Kingdom Albums Chart, with 1 on the United Kingdom Albums Chart.

Stoermer's third studio album, The Loudest Engine, was released in 2010. The album was shot at Battle Born Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was released in September 2011.

During George Harrison Week, Stoermer performed "Let It Down" and "Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp" with Dhani Harrison on Conan on Conan on Sunday.

Stoermer, along with Billy Corgan, Jeff Schroeder, and Brad Wilk, performed bass guitar on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins in late 2014 and early 2015. Stoermer, a Smashing Pumpkins fan who had been following each band's respective shows in recent years, was invited by Corgan to join the touring line-up in support of the Smashing Pumpkins' then-new album Monuments to an Elegy. Stoermer was perplexed by the quality of the new content's ability, which led to his acceptance. "I had to hear the latest music, which I think is amazing." I wouldn't be doing it if the latest music wasn't up to par. It was something I had to do, yes, it was one of those things I had to do," he said.

On BBC Radio 6, Stoermer performed "Maida Vale" with Smashing Pumpkins on December 1, 2014. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, he performed "Being Beige" with Smashing Pumpkins on December 11, 2014. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he performed "Drum + Fife" with the Smashing Pumpkins on April 3, 2015.

Stoermer took a break from touring "to pursue other educational interests and releasing a solo album," the Killers announced on May 24, 2016. Stoermer was still involved in producing the band's fifth album, according to the note, and he may still perform live with them. In a chat, Stoermer elaborated: "I'm taking a class online right now." The reason for my absence is to take a break, but not necessarily. It's a blend of a number of things. I've been doing the Killers since 2003, and I suspect about a thousand shows. On November 1, 2011, St. August Records' debut studio album Another Life was released as a self-release. On January 24, 2012, it was available for free download via markstoermer.com and sold on CD and vinyl. It was also released on iTunes the same day as two bonus tracks. Stoermer produced the album in early 2011 with the help of Glenn Moule and Joel Stein from Howling Bells, and Jason Hill from Louis XIV. Robert Root mixed the album and mastered by Bob Ludwig.

Dark Arts was released on August 5, 2016, as a self-release on St. August Records. Stoermer wrote and produced the album. David Hopkins was also involved in writing and production. Robert Root mixed and engineered the album.

On July 22, 2016, the first single "Spare the Ones Weep" was released. Are Your Stars Out? The second single "Are Your Stars Out" is a young American television show. On July 29, 2016, a Billboard interview in which Stoermer talked about his inspiration for the song's lyrics was released. The album was released on CD and on vinyl.

"I wanted to do at least one [record] that was an album experience," Stoermer said about his proposal for writing "Dark Arts" in Interview Magazine. If anything, it may be a throwback to those days... Perhaps someone out there will have the same experience with this album."

The album, which was released in sixties psychedelic foundations, is noticeably different from that of his fellow Killers' work.

The Blood and Guts / Beautiful Deformities 7-inch was a limited edition vinyl that was limited to 100 copies, but only 100 copies were made that were decorated with one of ten unique designs, and only ten of each design were made. On one hand, the single Blood and Guts (The Anatomy Lesson) was featured, and on the other, Beautiful Deformities (The Monastic Controversy) was included. Through the Secret Door, a private page on Mark's website that was launched as a "thank you" note, 100 additional copies were made and gave away to fans. These copies didn't have the same picture disc artwork as the other 100 copies.

Stoermer invited several musicians to form the Hownds, a five-person band featuring David Hopkins (keyboards), Nigel Ledgerwood (rhythm guitar), Ben Lecourt (drums), and Erik Paparozzi (bass). They appeared in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, with five shows between them.

Filthy Apes and Lions was released on vinyl on October 13, as well as on CD and on CD on November 17, 2017, Stoermer's label St. August Records. The first single, "Filthy Apes and Lions," was released on October 13, 2017. The second single, "Beautiful Deformities," was released on November 11, 2017.

With Robert Root, Mark Stoermer and David Hopkins wrote and produced Filthy Apes and Lions. Robert Root mixed and engineered the album. The album is a departure from the work he is best known for in the Killers, which is sprinkled with sixties psychedelic foundations, jazz fusion, and progressive rock.

Stoermer talked about the songwriting process behind "Filthy Apes and Lions": I was doing a stream-of-consciousness, surrealistic exercise in which you write out whatever's on the top of your head, then I started writing rhymes, not knowing where I was going, and then I realized the song's lyrics: "Filthy Apes and Lions" was on the radio, and then I realized where I was going.
