Musical career
Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart, two original Floetry members, met through their passion for basketball. Both Stewart and Ambrosius attended BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, where Ambrosius studied Management and Finance, as well as Stewart Performing Arts, Media, and Art. Ambrosius, a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, planned to enroll, but was unable due to a sickness. Stewart attended Middlesex University in London and later transferred to North London University. The women stayed in touch through the years. Stewart was a founder of the performance poetry group 3 Plus 1, which was on the rise to Han Solo in London, Birmingham, and Manchester. Ambrosius composed and performed "Fantasize," inviting Stewart to lend some of her poetry to the recording in 1999. Floetry was born as a result of this collaboration.
In 2000, the pair travelled to the United States to perform on the poetry tour. They moved to Philadelphia after frequenting spoken word/poetry restaurants, such as Yin Yang Poets' Cafe (which received rave reviews). They met Darren "Limitless" Henson and Keith "Keshon" Pelzer of DJ Jazzy Jeff's Touch Of Jazz studio in Nashville and began recording. She also worked with Michael Jackson - she produced and performed "Butterflies" from the album "Invincible" released in 2001 and a single version of this song was released in 2002. They signed with DreamWorks Records in the same year and launched their debut album Floetic," "Say Yes" and "Getting Late." In the United Kingdom, the album was also released with additional tracks, one of which features British singer/songwriter and producer Sebastian Rogers. They have two more albums out: Floacism, a live effort, and 2005's studio album Flo'Ology.
Ambrosius has appeared on several songs, including Styles P's "I'm Black"; The Game's "Start from Scratch; and "Why You Hate The Game." (also featuring Nas); Busta Rhymes' "Get You Some" and "Cocaina"; Nas' "Hustlers" (also featuring The Game); and Hi-Tek's "Music for Life" and Jamie Foxx's "Freak'in Me" are among the "Get it Now" and "Get The Game"; and "Get You Some" and "Cocaina); and "Get Some" and "Cocaina); and "Get You" On the track "Elevated," the group has also collaborated with Earth, Wind & Fire on their album Illumination, including the group's "Elevated." She sang the ad lib "Cry Me, Cry Me" at the end of the song, as well as background vocals to the Justin Timberlake single "Cry Me a River." "Cloud 9" was her collaboration with Slum Village on a song. She appeared on Wale's "Diary" in 2009.
As a solo musician/producer, Ambrosius was invited to join Dr. Dr. Dre's record label, Aftermath Entertainment. Neo Soul is Dead, a 2007 mixtape, was released. Ambrosius continued her writing/production career, landing her work with R&B and hip hop artists, ranging from Alicia Keys, Raven-Symoné, Jamie Foxx, and Mario to Fabolous, Slum Village, and Wale.
Following a long-awaited appearance at NYC's SOB's, where a sold out crowd accompanied by The Roots and DJ Aktive, Ambrosius was approached by several record labels offering her a solo contract in summer 2009. Ambrosius' solo debut Late Nights & Early Mornings was released on January 1, 2011 in December 2009, when she had signed to J Records in December 2009. Canei Finch's album "Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player)" was released as the album's first single on August 13. The album debuted on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Songs chart, peaking at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Songs chart. 22. On December 7, 2010, the album's second single, "Far Away," was released as the album's second single. The album will debut at No. 1 on the charts. 1 on the US Billboard R&B Albums chart and No. 1 and No. 2 are among the items on the chart and No. 1. The top two spots on the US Billboard 200 behind Adele and ahead of Mumford & Sons, marking the first time in over 20 years that British acts have topped the US charts.
At the BET Awards of 2011, Ambrosius received the Centric Award. At the BET Awards 2012, she was also selected for Best Female R&B Artist.
At the 2011 Soul Train Awards, Ambrosius received the Record of the Year (Ashford & Simpson Songwriters Award) for his song "Far Away."
