Mark Strickson, born 6 April 1959, is a British television producer and actor best known for his role as Vislor Turlough, a Fifth Doctor companion to the television series Doctor Who.
Early life
Strickson was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He attended King Edward VI Grammar School in his hometown, the same as William Shakespeare, and was also a chorister at Holy Trinity Church (Shakespeare's Church), where his father, John Strickson, was organist and choirmaster. At RADA in London, he studied drama. Strickson, the neoscope researcher at the University of New England's Armidale campus, part-funded his education by teaching theatre studies for five years after he left Doctor Who. He later moved to Dunedin, New Zealand, where he took up residence.
Career
He appeared in the BBC medical drama Angels before landing his role in Doctor Who, in which he starred for two years. In the 1984 version of A Christmas Carol, he appeared alongside young Ebenezer Scrooge.
Strickson went on to become a wildlife documentary producer and director, particularly of wildlife documentary films. He has produced programs for, among other things, the Discovery Channel, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Animal Planet. It was he who brought Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter," to public view with shows such as The Ten Deadliest Snakes in the World.
In 1983, Strickson appeared at Doctor Who's 20th-anniversary celebrations in Longleat, alongside many other cast and crew members from the film. In the Big Finish Productions Doctor Who audio dramas, he has reprised the role of Turlough. He has also contributed interviews and voiceover commentaries for the DVD releases of his various Doctor Who serials.
