Aidan Quinn (born March 8, 1959) is an American/Irish actor who made his film debut in Reckless (1984).

He has appeared in more than 80 films, including Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Stakeout (1987), Avalon (1990), Michael Collins (1994), Legends of the Fall (1994), Michael Collins (1991), and Unknown (2011). In his roles in An Early Frost (1985) and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007), Quinn has received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

In the CBS television series Elementary (2012–2019), he played Captain Thomas "Tommy" Gregson.

Early life

Quinn was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Irish Catholic parents. He was born in Chicago and Rockford, Illinois, as well as in Dublin and Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. Teresa Quinn, a bookkeeper and travel writer, and his father, Michael Quinn, was a professor of English literature at Rock Valley College. Quinn realized he wanted to be an actor when he was nineteen and living as a roofer. He received his training at the Piven Theatre Workshop.

He has three brothers and a sister. Declan Quinn, his older brother, is a cinematographer, and Mariann Quinn, his younger sister, is an actor, producer, and writer. Paul, a brother and producer, died in 2015 at the age of 55.

Personal life

Elizabeth Bracco, Quinn's older sister of actress Lorraine Bracco), was married in 1987. Mia (b. ), a teen who was born in the United States, has two daughters. Ava Eileen (b. 1998) and Ava Eileen (b. 1998) (Busters' 1989) has autism. In Avalon, Ava appeared as the baby "David," and Mia played a ghost in The Eclipse. In the Catskills/Wodltown district of Ulster County, New York, former residents of Englewood, New Jersey, Quinn and his family now live in Palisades, Rockland County, New York, and Marbletown.

Career

In Reckless, his first significant film role was followed by a breakthrough appearance in Desolately Seeking Susan as the character "Dez" (the love interest of Rosanna Arquette's character). Quinn appeared in the tense television film An Early Frost, about a young gay lawyer dying of AIDS, on NBC on November 11, 1985, and co-starred Gena Rowlands, Ben Gazzara, and Sylvia Sidney). He was nominated for the first Emmy Award for the role. In The Mission, he made an interesting appearance as Robert De Niro's brother. Richard "Stick" Montgomery, a prisoner who appeared in the action comedy Stakeout opposite Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez, was released on bail.

Quinn lost the role of Jesus Christ in 1983, after Paramount Pictures withheld the rights to Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ. Willem Dafoe played the role when Universal Pictures picked up the film. In the meantime, Quinn appeared as protagonist in the film Crusoe, which was released in 1989.

He appeared in Legends of the Fall, Benny & Joon, The Handmaid's Tale, Haunted, and Practical Magic in the 1990s. He appeared in Michael Collins' album "Is My Father," This Is My Father, and Evelyn. In the Francis Ford Coppola-produced Frankenstein, he appeared in a small cameo as the captain of a doomed Arctic vessel.

In the VH1 television drama Two of Us, Quinn portrayed Paul McCartney in 2000.
