Early life
Morris is the son of actor Greg Morris (1933-1996). Francis Williams, a jazz trumpeter, was his paternal grandfather. Phil Morris has two children, one of whom is actress Iona Morris.
During the show's complete run from 1966 to 1973, his father was best known for appearing in Mission: Impossible. His father was friends with other well-known African American actors, including Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby, and Phil grew up seeing them as role models. His father, also known as Mission: Impossible Lead Peter Graves, was consulted by Morris to consider his acting mentor. Morris knew Graves' real-life children from his childhood. The friendship continued well into Peter Graves' death on March 14, 2010, which devastated Morris.
Personal life
Morris has been married to interior designer Carla Gittelson since 1983. They have two children together. He is a Wing Chun expert under Sifu Hawkins Cheung.
Career
Morris' first acting appearance in the 1966 Star Trek episode "Miri" was as a child. Star Trek was shot in the same studio (Desilu Productions) that made Mission: Impossible at the time.
In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in a small role, he appeared in Babylon 5, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager.
In The Young and the Restless, he portrayed law student (later counsel) Tyrone Jackson in the mid-1980s. His character used heavy theatrical make-up to appear Caucasian in order to go undercover to expose an underground crime group during a major storyline. Morris portrayed Johnnie Cochran-inspired defense attorney Jackie Chiles on the comedy Seinfeld in the 1990s. Chiles suing a tobacco firm, which Morris said he enjoyed a great deal of laughing out loud, being portrayed on the same name as Philip Morris, who was also known as the tobacco brand. Morris also appeared in Mission: Impossible's television version as technology wizard Grant Collier (son of Barney Collier, who appeared in Morris's original series, Greg Morris). He appeared in Disney's 2001 film Atlantis: The Lost Empire's supporting role as well as its 2003 sequel, Atlantis: Milo's Return. On the NBC show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, he appeared as one of Will Smith's college professors, and on the then-UPN television show Girlfriends, he played Dr. Clay Spencer.
