Marcin Gortat Career

Early life and career

Gortat competed in the high jump as a child and played football and track and field, where he also competed in football and track and field. During the Munich and Montreal 1976 Olympics, Janusz Gortat's father, a Polish boxer and a bronze medalist, as well as his mother, Alicja Gortat, was a representative of the Polish national team in volleyball. Robert, his older brother who is also a boxer, is his uncle.

Gortat and his brother Filip grew up in ód, Poland. He graduated from Technical School in ód. He speaks Polish, German, and Serbian, in addition to Polish. He is also a major Motorcycle Speedway fan, who is often seen supporting Polish club Motor Lublin. Bartosz Zmarzlik, the 2x World Champion, is also seen at Speedway Grand Prix appearances regularly, assisting his good friend, Bartosz Zmarzlik.

Gortat began his career in Kansas's Basketball Bundesliga and spent three seasons with RheinEnergie Cologne in Germany's Basketball Bundesliga, winning the domestic championship in 2006 and playing in the 2006–07 Euroleague season for the first time in the team's history. Gortat decided to continue playing in Germany after being drafted 57th overall in the 2005 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns (with his rights later sold to the Orlando Magic).

Gortat says he is a Roman Catholic and that his faith gives him hope and inspires him.

NBA career

Gortat signed with the Orlando Magic on August 2, 2007. He was drafted to the Anaheim Arsenal of the NBA Development League on November 20, 2007. He was recalled from the D-League on December 2, and he made his Magic debut against the New York Knicks on March 1, 2008. In a 103–83 Magic victory over the Washington Wizards, little-used Gortat played 28 minutes and 11 rebounds in the Magic's last game of the 2007–08 season. Gortat won by 28 minutes and 13 rebounds in a 108-98 victory over the Golden State Warriors on December 15, 2008, starting in place of the injured Dwight Howard. Gortat played almost 43 minutes and led his career in rebounding with 18 rebounds and 10 points on April 13, 2009. Gortat made his first playoff appearance against the Philadelphia 76ers on April 30, 2009, swapping Howard, who was suspended due to his conduct in game 5. The Magic defeated the 76ers 4–2. He had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Gortat became the first Polish-born player to ever play in the NBA Finals, thanks to his Magic playoff run.

Gortat, a restricted free agent, signed a five-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks on July 8, 2009. However, Orlando blocked Gortat from travelling to Dallas by matching the offer sheet on July 13, 2009. Gortat was reported to be "very sad" to leave the Magic, considering that being the backup to Dwight Howard would result in limited playing time, whereas playing for Dallas would have most likely meant being the starting center.

Gortat was released on December 18, 2010 by Vince Carter, Mickaya, a 2011 first-round draft pick (which would become Nikola Miroti) and $3 million in exchange for Jason Richardson, Earl Clark, and then-former Magic player and former teammate Hedo Türkolu. During his time with the Suns, Steve Nash wore the #3 jersey, which was the number worn by Gortat in Orlando and Poland. He wore #4 for his stint with the Suns. His numbers increased during his first season with the Suns, starting off the bench and then starting at center in place of Robin Lopez. Gortat went by the name "The Polish Hammer" during his stay in Phoenix, a nickname he was given to him during his time with the Orlando Magicians.

Gortat averaged 15.4 points and 10.0 rebounds per game during the 2011–12 season, just down from lockout. He was the only Suns player to start and play every game of the regular season. Gortat was also one of former Magic teammate Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, and DeMarcus Cousins as the only centers to post a double-double this season. He was invited to the Polish national basketball team for the 2013 qualification round of the FIBA EuroBasket 2013. In Poland's second game against Finland, he scored 27 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to help Poland qualify for the 2013 FIBA Eurobasket tournament.

In a 117-110 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on November 7, 2012, he scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and had a career-best 7 blocks. Gortat sustained a knee injury in late February and was left off the team for the remainder of the season.

Gortat was traded by the Washington Wizards on October 25, 2013, along with Shannon Brown, Malcolm Lee, and Kendall Marshall, in exchange for Emeka Okafor and a 2014 protected first-round draft pick.

Gortat defeated the Toronto Raptors 134–129 on February 27, 2014, scoring a career-high 31 points and 12 rebounds. On May 13, he scored 31 points (his playoff career high) and 16 rebounds to help the Wizards avoid elimination in Game 5 of their second-round match with the Indiana Pacers. In a playoff game since Moses Malone in 1987, he became the first Wizards player to have at least 30 points and 15 rebounds. The Wizards lost Game 6 of the series, losing 4–2 to the Pacers.

Gortat re-signed with the Wizards on July 10, 2014, to a five-year, $60 million contract.

Gortat was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played December 21–27 for the first time in his career. In the Wizards' 116-108 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on February 29, 2016, he scored 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds.

Gortat was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Austin Rivers on June 26, 2018. He was waived by the Clippers on February 7, 2019.

Gortat officially announced his basketball retirement on February 16, 2020, on February 16, 2020.
