Mitch Kupchak Life

Mitchell Kupchak (born May 24, 1954) is an American professional basketball executive and retired athlete.

He is the current president of basketball operations and general manager of the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Kupchak, a student at the University of North Carolina, was an All-American and a member of the 1976 Olympic team, winning gold medalists.

As a professional athlete, he has won three NBA titles, one as a member of the Washington Bullets and two with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Personal life

With the Class of 1990, Kupchak was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame on Long Island in the Basketball Category. In 2002, he was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame. He is married to Claire, with whom he had two children. Alina Claire Kupchak's daughter died on January 5, 2015, following a long illness. Maxwell's uncle played as a forward for the UC Santa Barbara basketball team.

High school and college career

In New York, Kupchak attended Brentwood High School. In his senior year, he was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year on the North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team, and was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Kupchak was on the gold medal winning squad.

NBA career

In 1976, Kupchak was drafted by the Washington Bullets and named to the NBA All-Rookie Team. He spent four years in Washington, and was a member of the 1978 NBA championship squad. After the team's playoff loss, he signed a long-term contract with the Lakers in 1981 at the behest of Earvin "Magic" Johnson, who told owner Jerry Buss, "I think we can win if we could get Mitch Kupchak." Kupchak sustained his knee injury and did not play again until the 1983–84 season.

In 1985, Kupchak was a key member of the Showtime Lakers' 1985 championship team against the Boston Celtics, who had threatened them in the previous year's Finals. With regular season averages of 10.2 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game in the playoffs), Kupchak retired after the 1985–86 season, having played 510 regular season and 68 playoff games. A brawl broke out between the Lakers and the Houston Rockets during Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, with Kupchak and Hakeem Olajuwon ejected.
