Career

José Alves Santos, a Brazilian forward who played for Club América, and his mother, a Croatian housewife, was born in Mexico. Zague spent his youth in Brazil, beginning with Corinthians in youth football. He returned to Mexico in 1985 and made his Mexican Club América debut a year later.

His testimonial game at the Estadio Azteca, where America will defeat FC Barcelona 2-0 on October 2, 2003.

He was a physically fit and fast striker who was considered one of the best in his prime years for both América and Mexico. Hugo Sánchez was his strike partner in Copa América 1993, where he finished as Mexico's top goalscorer of the tournament.

He was in the Mexico squad for the 1993 CONCACAF Gold Cup in which Mexico won the title and was the tournament's top scorer with 11 goals, which is still a CONCACAF record. Against Martinique, seven of those goals were scored.

In 84 caps for his country, he scored 30 goals.

With 209 goals, he is the 7th best goalscorer in México's Primera División de México.

Zague, along with Luis Garca and Jorge Campos, has been an analyst for TV Azteca since 2018.
