Claudio Caniggia Career

Club career

Caniggia (1985–89), Hellas Verona (1988–2000), Roma (1992–2000), S.L. Benfica (1994–95), Boca Juniors (1995–98), Dundee (2000–01) and Rangers (2001–03). He has played for many of the clubs he has attended, including when scoring against Dunfermline in 2003 to help Rangers win the championship.

After accumulating 53 appearances and 8 goals for River Plate, Caniggia made the switch to Hellas Verona in 1988. He then moved to Atalanta, 1989, where he would stay for three years and score 26 goals in 85 league games. He competed twice in the UEFA Cup with Atalanta, assisting the club in reaching the quarter-finals in the 1990–91 season. Caniggia later referred to his time in Atalanta as "the best years in his career," despite not winning any silverware.

Caniggia migrated to Roma in 1992, a move that both sides hoped would help the club improve in the Scudetto, but Roma lost steam mid-season with only 15 points from 17 games. Caniggia was banned from smoking cocaine following a surprise doping test on March 21, 1993, and he has a history of enjoying the high life. After his ban came to an end, he joined Benfica on a year-long loan financed by the Parmalat dairy company. Valencia contacted him during his Benfica run. He was wearing the white kit during a friendly match between Valencia and Brazil in Mestalla. He played as a visitor in a team where Tenerife's Diego Latorre was also included in the squad. Valencia had to pay 80 million pesetas for the inclusion of both players in the friendly, but only received 66 million in ticket sales.

Eduardo Eurnekian, the Argentina media mogul, then obtained the rights to Caniggia from Roma and Diego Maradona, loaning them to Boca Juniors in exchange for matches played on his television networks. Caniggia's outspoken wife refused to return to Argentina after completing his one-year service, and he was closely linked to England clubs. In September 1996, his mother committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of her house, and Caniggia did not play in the 1996–97 season. He returned to Boca in 1997-98, but his appearances were uneventful as he was left out of the 1998 World Cup squad. He rejoined Atalanta in Serie B for another season of inactivity, assisting the club in promotion to Serie A, but the club was forced to leave after one season due to a controversy with coach Giovanni Vavassori. He then signed for Dundee, Scotland's under new Ivano Bonnetti, who knew him well before they arrived in Italy. After scoring against arch rivals Celtic in a cup final, he quickly became Dundee's star player and moved to Rangers, becoming a fan favorite at Ibrox.

He was one of many former professional footballers to sign Wembley Stadium to play in their FA Cup debut for the new season in June 2012. Caniggia and fellow internationals Ray Parlour, Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Jaime Moreno, Danny Dichio, and Brian McBride, as well as former England manager Terry Venables (technical advisor) and former England manager Terry Venables, came out of retirement to play for Wembley Stadium. He appeared in a preliminary round of the FA Cup on August 12, 2012. He played the first goal in a 3–2 victory over Langford at the age of 45.

International career

Caniggia was a key player in both the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, but was not selected under coach Daniel Passarella's strict rule for France '98.

Caniggia was capped 50 times for Argentina, scoring 16 goals. He appeared in eight matches in 1990 and 1994, scoring four goals in eight games. Despite not having a high-profile club career nor ever playing for major European teams, Caniggia was renowned in Argentina for excelling for the national team. Caniggia, not a conventional striker or creative forward, was not a pure striker, but rather a playmaker or creative forward, contrary to popular belief and largely due to loose interpretation.

Caniggia was a great friend with Argentina's former international teammate Diego Maradona; the pair once celebrated a win with a kiss on the lips. "I believe Diego is in love with my husband at times," Claudio's wife, model Mariana Nannis, said at the time. It must be long hair and strong muscles."

Caniggia had two main goals during the 1990 World Cup to help Argentina reach the final. In Milan's inaugural match against Cameroon, he was drafted three times in a single dribble by Benjamin Massing, who earned the Cameroonian a straight red card (Massing kicked Caniggia so hard his own shoe came off). Caniggia was in the starting lineup in the subsequent matches. Argentina defeated Brazil in Turin in the second round, with the score 0–0 after 80 minutes, Caniggia one on one against Brazilian goalkeeper Taffarel; Caniggia dribbled past him and disqualified Brazil from the tournament, effectively ending Argentina and baning Brazil from the tournament. The goal gave him legendary status among Argentina's top prospects for defeating their chief rivals.

Argentina advanced to the semi-finals in Florence after defeating Yugoslavia in Florence on penalty kicks. In five games, the Italians had not surrendered any goals and were up 1–0 at halftime. Caniggia's goalkeeper Walter Zenga's cross into the net in the second half, snapping his record run without conceding a single point and bringing the game into extra time. After no change in the score, penalty kicks were made, and Argentina defeated Argentina again using this technique, progressing to the final. Caniggia had been warned in the team's second round match against the Soviet Union, but he was banned from playing the ball against Italy for intentionally manipulating the ball, earning him a suspension. He had to watch his team and Germany advance to the final of the Rome stands after Argentina lost 1–0.

Caniggia demonstrated his talent during 1991 Copa América; he scored two goals and made four assists in the tournament while Argentina defeated Argentina, winning the championship. He also helped Argentina win the 1992 Confederations Cup, in which he scored a goal in the final itself. He scored the goal of Argentina and Denmark's 1–1 draw in the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions held in Mar del Plata in February 1993. Argentina was eventually crowned the Intercontinental champion after losing by penalties and being named the Intercontinental champion.

Caniggia scored two goals in the 1994 World Cup, the first from a Gabriel Batistuta free kick return and second from a Diego Maradona free kick, both of whom finished, placing the ball in the top right hand corner. He was forced to leave Argentina's third game against Bulgaria by 26 minutes into the match in Dallas' s boiling heat, and the Argentinas were also without Maradona. He was left out of Argentina's team's Round of 16 matches against Romania in Los Angeles; Argentina lost 3–2 and was out of the tournament; Argentina was left out of the tournament.

Despite the instructions of national coach Daniel Passarella, he was banned from the national team for a number of years. For the 2002 World Cup, he made a brief return to the Marcelo Bielsa-coached squad but did not participate. In Argentina's last match against Sweden, he received a warning for cursing at the referee from the bench, making him the first player to be banned from the bench in a World Cup.
