Lucian Msamati Life

Lucian Gabriel Wiina Msamati (born 5 March 1976) is a British-Tanzanian film, television, and theatre actor.

He appeared on HBO's Game of Thrones as Salladhor Saan, and he was the first black actor to play Iago at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2015 production of Othello.

Early life and education

Msamati was born in London and brought up in Zimbabwe by his Tanzanian parents, a surgeon, and a nurse; he is the youngest of four siblings. His primary education began at Olympio Primary School in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, and then moved to Avondale Primary School in Harare, Zimbabwe. He completed a BA honours degree in French and Portuguese at the University of Zimbabwe from 1995 to 1997, following secondary education at Prince Edward School in Harare.

He worked as an advertisement copywriter and a freelance radio host after university. He has worked as a voice-over artist, compere, and after-dinner speaker.

Shaheen Jassat (deceased), Craig and Gavin Peter, Roy Chizivano, Kevin Hanssen, and Sarah Norman established Over the Edge Theatre Company in Harare in 1994, later joined by Erica Glyne, Zane E. Lucas, Chipo Chung, Karin Alexander, Rob Hollands, and Michael Pearce. The Zimbabwe flag was flown across Europe, the United States, and South Africa on its 10th anniversary in December 2004. Individuals have been involved in other endeavors over the past few years. Although not officially disbanded, there are no plans for a Over the Edge reunion. The company appeared at Edinburgh's Festival Fringe from 1998 to 2001; Msamati wrote several of the plays.

Msamati was appointed Artistic Director of TATA Fahodzi in November 2010 before being overthrown in 2014 by Natalie Ibu. He has continued to work with Tiata Fahodzi, directing Boi Boi Boi is Dead in February–March 2015.

Msamati played Iago in the first black actor to play Iago in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Othello (with Hugh Quarshie in the title role).

He appeared in Peter Shaffer's play Amadeus at the National Theatre from October 2016 to March 2017, a performance that Michael Billington praised as "excellent" in a four-starred review for The Guardian.

Sam in Master Harold and the Boys at the Royal National Theatre appeared in 2019.

He has appeared in episodes of BBC television series Luther, Ashes to Ashes, Doctor Who, Taboo, and Death in Paradise, as well as playing the role of pirate Salladhor Saan in HBO's Game of Thrones. On BBC One, he appeared in Lord Faa's Dark Materials. Ed Dumani appeared in Sky Atlantic's Gangs of London and in an episode of Alan Bennett's Talking Heads appeared on the BBC in 2020.

Msamati appeared in the film The International (2009). Lumumba (1999), directed by Raoul Peck; and animated film The Legend of the Sky Kingdom (2004), directed by Roger Hawkins and Richard II; Rupert Goold's directed The Legend of the Sky Kingdom (2003).
