Career

Elba's first acting role was in Crimewatch murder reconstructions, and he appeared in The Boot Street Band, a BBC children's drama. He landed his first significant role on a series called Bramwell, a medical drama set in 1890s England. In an episode of Season 1, an African petty thief named Charlie Carter, who lost his wife to childbirth and had to figure out how to help his newborn daughter. His first professional appearance on a "Sex" episode of Absolutely Fabulous began in 1995. Several supporting characters appeared on British television, including shows such as The Bill and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. He joined the cast of Family Affairs to appear on the television series Ultraviolet and later on Dangerfield. Soon after, he decided to move to New York City. He returned to England occasionally for a television appearance, such as a role in one of Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Elba appeared Achilles in a stage performance of Troilus and Cressida in New York City in 2001.

In 1997, he appeared in the first two episodes of series 2 "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" in Silent Witness.

Elba received a starring role in the 2002 HBO drama series The Wire after a supporting role on a 2001 episode of Law & Order. Variety announced that Elba would play Charles Miner, a new challenge to Dunder Mifflin regional manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell) for NBC's The Office in January 2009. In James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, Elba portrayed mercenary Robert "Milton" DuBois / Bloodsport in 2021. Elba has appeared in music videos for Fat Joe (2002), Angie Stone (2004), and rapper Giggs (2010). He released the four-song EP Big Man for Hevlar Records in 2006. In July 2018, he formed 7Wallace Music, his first record label. Elba appeared at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2019. Elba performed a guest DJ mix on Mix Up, Australia's national youth broadcaster Triple J, on February 13, 2021. Elba revealed on September 22nd that he would have a joint EP with Australian pop rock duo Cordiale titled Cordi Elba, which was released on January 2022. Elba also collaborated with Paul McCartney on a remix of McCartney's "Long Tailed Winter Bird."

On BBC Radio 2, Elba presented Journey Dot Africa with Idris Elba in October 2014. The series explored all forms of African music. Elba has appeared in various television commercials for Sky box-sets in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019. Elba has collaborated with the UK Parliament in their attempts to eradicate Ebola from West Africa, and has worked with UK Secretary of State Justine Greening in 2014. Elba has formed an association with British fashion brand Superdry, which was unveiled in November 2015.

Elba spoke to the UK Parliament in January 2016 about the lack of representation on screen. 'Change is coming, but it's taking its sweet time,' he said of the lack of diversity in terms of race, gender, and sexuality.

He had the idea to bring the music from his album Idris Elba Presents mi Mandela's album to the stage, which culminated in a play called Tree, which premiered at the Manchester International Festival in 2019. The piece's authorship was doubted, though. The Guardian published a story on July 2nd detailing how writers Tori Allen-Martin and Sarah Henley were dismissed from the project under what they described as questionable circumstances. Following Elba's invitation for them to develop their idea for a musical based on the album's which Allen-Martin had collaborated on, the two writers had been working on the project for four years. Kwame Kwei-Armah began writing a portion of their content in May 2018. "Idris Elba and Kwame Kwei-Armah" was billed at the time of its premiere Tree as "created by Idris Elba and Kwame Kwei-Armah." Allen-Martin and Henley said their artistic contribution included study and script-writing as well as determining the play's name, and that if they went public with the tale, they might be threatened with court trouble if they went public with it. Elba and Kwei-Armah have both published rebuttals of the writers' account of what happened on Twitter.

He has recently agreed to produce original content through his Green Door Pictures production firm, which is headquartered in Apple. The firms of Elba and his partner, Sabrina Dhowre, and Crunchyroll's niece, Dantai, were announced in January 2021, which would be about a time when biotech has "created an ever-widening divide between the haves and have-nots."
