Elba's first acting role was in Crimewatch murder reconstructions, and he appeared in The Boot Street Band, a BBC children's drama. He landed his first significant role on a series called Bramwell, a medical drama set in 1890s England. In an episode of Season 1, an African petty thief named Charlie Carter, who lost his wife to childbirth and had to figure out how to help his newborn daughter. His first professional appearance on a "Sex" episode of Absolutely Fabulous began in 1995. Several supporting characters appeared on British television, including shows such as The Bill and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. He joined the cast of Family Affairs to appear on the television series Ultraviolet and later on Dangerfield. Soon after, he decided to move to New York City. He returned to England occasionally for a television appearance, such as a role in one of Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Elba appeared Achilles in a stage performance of Troilus and Cressida in New York City in 2001.

In 1997, he appeared in the first two episodes of series 2 "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" in Silent Witness.

Elba received a starring role in the 2002 HBO drama series The Wire after a supporting role on a 2001 episode of Law & Order. Russell "Stringer" Bell appeared in the series from 2002 to 2004, perhaps his best-known role in the United States. In 2005, he played Captain Augustin Muganza in When, an HBO film about the Rwandan genocide. Elba appeared on the 2007 BET documentary Black Men: The Truth. He appeared in The Mountain Between Us and Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut Molly's Game in 2017 as Roland Deschain in Stephen King's film adaptation The Dark Tower. Elba appeared in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a spin-off of Fast & Furious, and she played Macavity in Tom Hooper's film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, Cats, in 2019. In James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, Elba portrayed mercenary Robert "Milton" DuBois / Bloodsport in 2021. Elba, the voice of Knuckles in the film Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a sequel to the film Sonic the Hedgehog, was based on the same brand, and she will reprise her role in a self-titled solo series for In 2022, she was the voice of Knuckles, and she'll reprise her role in a self-titled solo series for Paraphrasedoutput.

Allen-Martin and Henley said their artistic contribution included study and script-writing as well as determining the play's name, and that if they went public with the tale, they might be threatened with court trouble if they went public with it. Elba and Kwei-Armah have both published rebuttals of the writers' account of what happened on Twitter.

He has recently agreed to produce original content through his Green Door Pictures production firm, which is headquartered in Apple.
