Lou Monte Life

Lou Monte (April 2, 1917 – June 12, 1989), an Italian American singer best known for a number of best-selling, Italian-themed novelty albums that he produced for both RCA Victor and Reprise Records in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

He has appeared on Roulette Records, Jubilee Records, Regalia Records, Musicor Records, Laurie Records, and AFE Records.

Early life

Monte was born in Manhattan on April 2, 1917 to Italian immigrant parents, but his mother died when he was only two years old. He was born in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and he began performing at the age of fourteen. But success came slowly: he sang and played guitar in a variety of clubs, but he didn't begin to gain a large following until about fifteen years ago.

Lou Monte Career

Early career

He was already a headliner at several New Jersey clubs by the 1940s, and he was also a headliner at several New York clubs. Monte wanted to put his career on hold and enlist in the Army as World War II came out. He resumed playing in clubs and was given a break when he was hired by WAAT AM 970 in Newark, New Jersey, in 1948 to do his own show. Monte wanted to fine tune his performance, and it helped him to reach a larger audience. He was rewarded by the station for urging its sister TV station, WATV/13, to air him some time.

Monte made a couple of recordings on local labels before this exposure. Joe Carlton, an A&R for RCA Victor Records, was seen performing in a spaghetti joint south of Secaucus. He loved his playing style and the way he led himself on the guitar. He was given a seven-year contract with RCA Victor. Joe Carlton will begin his Carlton Records career.
