Her appearance on the program was well-reviewed, and she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series on July 10, 2014.
Caplan was cast in her role as Johnson before they signed her co-star Michael Sheen as William H. Masters because he was busy filming another set. "We knew Lizzie we had to embodd so much of Virginia Johnson's spirit," producer Sarah Timberman said of Caplan. Caplan also stated that she identified with several of Johnson's characteristics as a single woman living her career above a family's family's. She met the designers but it took several months before Caplan was officially signed, and she took on several other projects in the meantime.
Virginia Johnson began working with William H. Masters as they began their study into human sexual response and sexual dysfunction in the late 1950s. Caplan and her fellow co-stars read Thomas Maier's 2009 book Masters of Sex to learn about the characters they were portraying. Caplan was also able to listen to some of Johnson's interview tapes. Caplan tried to spend some time with Johnson before she died in 2013, but Johnson was ambivalent about the show's progress. It was the first time Caplan portrayed a human being in an interview, but it was clear that she felt a "deep responsibility" to Johnson but that there was some wiggle room because most people had no idea what Johnson looked or sounded like. The show's designers remained largely accurate to his book, according to Maier, who also included other activities that are historically important to St. Louis, where the series takes place and where Masters and Johnson lived. Caplan has discussed becoming familiar with the massive number of sex scenes in Masters of Sex.
Virginia E. Johnson, the American sexologist, was her first serious role, earning her nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award, Satellite Award, and Critics' Choice Television Award, among others for Outstanding Lead Actress.
