Early life and family

Dunst was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, on April 30, 1982. Dunst's father worked for Siemens as a medical services executive, and her mother worked for Lufthansa as a flight attendant. She was also an artist and one-time gallery owner. Dunst's father is German, and her American mother is of German and Swedish descent. Dunst lived in Brick Township, New Jersey, and attended Ranney School in Tinton Falls until age 11.

After her parents separated in 1993, she and her mother and brother moved to Los Angeles with her mother and brother. Since graduating in 2000, she began acting as a student at Notre Dame High School and continued doing so. She found it difficult to cope with her growing fame in her teens, and she blamed her mother for enforcing her to behave as a child. However, she later said that her mother "always had the best intentions." Dunst said, "Well, it's not a natural way to grow up, but it's the way I grew up and I wouldn't change it." I have my stuff to work with... I don't think anyone would sit around and say, 'My life is more screwed up than yours.' Everyone has their problems."

Personal life

Dunst purchased a house in Toluca Lake, California, in 2001, and sold it in September 2019 for $4.5 million. She sold a house in Nichols Canyon, California, for $1.4 million in 2010. Dunst owned a Lower Manhattan apartment that she listed for auction in 2017.

Dunst was diagnosed with depression at Utah's Cirque Lodge recovery center in early 2008. She left the medical center and started filming All Good Things in late March 2008. [...] Depression is real and should not be gossiped about."

Before breaking up in 2004, the two residents reportedly on friendly terms. Garrett Hedlund, a co-star on On the Road, was in a brief liaison with her before breaking up.

Jesse Plemons, her Fargo co-star, started dating her in 2016 and they became engaged in 2017. Their first son was born on May 3, 2018. She revealed she was pregnant with her second child and later gave birth to her second son in May 2021 in a cover shoot for W directed by longtime collaborator Sofia Coppola. In July 2022, Dunst and Plemons were married.

Dunst's breakthrough role came in 1994, when she appeared in the horror thriller Interview with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, based on Anne Rice's book of the same name. Claudia, Claudia, is a surrogate daughter of Cruise's and Pitt's characters. Dunst narrated her first onscreen kiss with Pitt, who is nearly two decades her senior, during the film. "I thought it was gross, that Brad had cooties," she explained. I was ten," she recalled. Although the film overall received mixed reviews, several commentators singled out Dunst's performance for acclaim. Roger Ebert rated Claudia's role as one of the film's "creepest" aspects, noting how well she had conveyed the sense of great age inside apparent youth. Dunst was "just right" for the family, according to Variety's Todd McCarthy. In addition to receiving a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, she received the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Actress and the Saturn Award for Best Young Actress.

Dunst appeared in the drama film Little Women with Winona Ryder and Claire Danes in 1994. The film was critically acclaimed. Janet Maslin of The New York Times praised it as the best interpretation of Louisa May Alcott's book of the same name and wrote about Dunst's appearance:

Dunst appeared in Jumanji, a loosening of Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 children's book of the same name. The tale is about a supernatural and ominous board game in which animals and other jungle dangers appear with each roll of the dice. Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, and David Alan Grier were among the ensemble cast members. The film was a commercial success and earned $262 million worldwide. Dunst was voted one of People magazine's Most Beautiful People in 2001 and 2002.

Dunst appeared in season three of the NBC medical drama ER from 1996 to 1997. She portrayed Charlie Chemingo, a child prostitute who was being cared for by Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney). In 1997, she appeared in the animated musical film Anastasia. Dunst appeared in the black comedy film Wag the Dog in 1997, opposite Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. Alexandra Kernochan's period comedy All I Wanna Do (1998), as she portrayed a girl's boarding school in the 1960s, opposite Gaby Hoffmann, Rachael Leigh Cook, and Lynn Redgrave. A. O. Scott of The New York Times opined that "the film is surprisingly pleasant," the filmmaker's characteristic respect and admiration for her characters and Hoffmann and Dunst's impeccable writing.

Dunst appeared in Drop Dead Gorgeous, a 1999 American black comedy parody film about a small town beauty pageant starring Ellen Barkin and Allison Janney. She turned down Angela Hayes (played by Mena Suvari) in American Beauty (1999) because she did not want to appear in the film's sexual scenes or kiss the lead character, played by Kevin Spacey. "I was 15 years old when I read it, and I don't think I was old enough to comprehend the script's details," she later explained. Dunst co-starred in the comedy film Dick, opposite Michelle Williams; it's a parody that retells the events of the Watergate scandal that resulted in former United States President Richard Nixon's ouster. Sofia Coppola's drama The Virgin Suicides (1999), based on Jeffrey Eugenides' book of the same name, was her next film. Lux Lisbon was one of Ronald Lisbon's struggling teenage daughters (James Woods). In 2000, the film was shown as a special preview at the 43rd San Francisco International Film Festival. The film received generally favorable feedback, according to Metacritic. Peter Stack, a San Francisco Chronicle reviewer, wrote that Dunst "beautifully balances innocence and wantonness." Dunst's first single from their second and final album Affirmation (1999), as well as Savage Garden's "I Knew I Loved You."

Dunst appeared in the comedy Bring It On as Torrance Shipman, the captain of a cheerleading squad. The film received mainly critical feedback, with many commentators reserving praise for her performance. A. O. Scott called her "a great comic actress" and "the nimbleness with which she can shift from anxiety to hurt in her essay. Even though Dunst hasn't been seen as well as in The Virgin Suicides, Charles Taylor of Salon said, "among contemporary teenage actresses, she has become the sunniest imaginable parodist." "She's as sprightly and adamantly daft as her role in Dick," Jessica Winter of The Village Voice said, "Dunst] is the only major feature of Bring It On that plays as a tweaking parody rather than slick, strident, body slam churlishness." Despite giving the film an unfavorable review, Peter Stack of the San Francisco Chronicle lauded Dunst for her ability "to be as ridiculous and cloyingly agreeable as it takes to get through a slapdash film."

Dunst appeared in the comedy film Get Over It this year. She later revealed that she was drawn to perform her singing because she had the opportunity to do so. Marion Davies appeared in the historical drama The Cat's Meow, directed by Peter Bogdanovich, as Marion Davies. "Playful and sporty," Derek Elley of Variety said of Dunst's best showing to date: "Believable as both a spoiled genius and a lover to two very different guys, the Dunst endows a potentially pale character with a lot of sympathy." At the 2002 Mar del Plata International Film Festival, she received the Best Actress Silver Omb award for her role.

Dunst starred opposite Tobey Maguire in the 2002 superhero film Spider-Man, the most commercially successful film of her career until this date. She played Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's top friend and love interest (Maguire). Sam Raimi produced the film. Dunst's ability to "lend even the smallest line a smidgeon of flirtatious music," according to Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman. Kenneth Turan, a Los Angeles Times reporter, argued that Dunst and Maguire made a real connection on film, concluding that their friendship "involved viewers to a degree never seen in films." Spider-Man was a critical and commercial success. The film grossed $114 million in North America during its first weekend and earned $822 million worldwide.

In the drama Levity (2003), a tale about a man who is released on parole and returns to his hometown in search of redemption, Dunst next co-starred Billy Bob Thornton, Morgan Freeman, and Holly Hunter. Julia Roberts, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Julia Stiles appeared in Mona Lisa Smile (2004), the same year. The film received mostly critical feedback, with Manohla Dargis of the Los Angeles Times describing it as "smug and reductive." In Michel Gondry's science fiction romantic comedy-drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Dunst co-starred Mary Svevo opposite Jim Cary, Kate Winslet, and Tom Wilkinson. The new film was critically acclaimed, with Entertainment Weekly describing Dunst's subplot as "nifty and clever." Around the world, the film earned $72 million.

Dunst regained her role as Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man 2, due to the success of the first Spider-Man series. Critics and a commercial success made the film a hit in North America's first weekend box office record. It was the second most successful film in 2004 with box office sales of $783 million worldwide. Dunst co-starred opposite Paul Bettany in Wimbledon's romantic comedy in which she portrayed a rising tennis player in the Wimbledon Championships, while Bettany portrayed a fading former tennis celebrity. The film received mixed reviews, but many observers adored Dunst's performance. Claudia Puig of USA Today observed that Dunst and Bettany's chemistry was potent, with Dunst doing a "fine job as a sassy and self-assured actor" in Dunst's "fine work."

Claire Colburn, Dunst's sole project of 2005, co-starred alongside Orlando Bloom in Cameron Crowe's romantic tragedy in Elizabethtown. At the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival, the film premiered. Dunst said that working with Crowe was rewarding but that it was more demanding than she had expected. The film received mixed reviews, with the Chicago Tribune grading it 1 out of 4 actors and describing Dunst's portrayal of a flight attendant as "cloying." It was also a case of missing out in the mail office. Dunst collaborated with Sofia Coppola once more and appeared as the title character in Marie Antoinette (2006), based on Antonia Fraser's book Marie Antoinette: The Journey. The film was shown at a special screening at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, and it was lauded by many. From a budget of $40 million, the film earned $60 million at the box office.

Dunst revived Mary Jane Watson's role in Spider-Man 3. Critics were split on Spider-Man 3's ferocious reviews in comparison to its predecessors' rave reviews. "The film-makers were unable to come up with much for Mary Jane to do other than screaming a lot," Ryan Gilbey of the New Statesman said of the Dunst's character. Despite this, it remains the most commercially lucrative film in the series and Dunst's highest-grossing film to date, with a worldwide gross of $891 million. She had initially signed up for three Spider-Man films, but only if Raimi and Maguire returned. In January 2010, it was revealed that the fourth film was cancelled and that the Spider-Man film collection would be revived, effectively dropping the trio from the franchise.

Dunst's next appearance appearance was in 2008, when she co-starred opposite Simon Pegg in the comedy How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, based on former Vanity Fair contributing editor Toby Young's memoir of the same name. Rotten Tomatoes, a review company, gave the film a 37 percent approval rating, despite the film receiving mainly critical feedback. "I see myself speaking in four different accents at once, none of whom are particularly of the English variety," Robert Wilonsky of The Village Voice wrote of Dunst's performance, saying she "seems to be speaking in four distinct accents at once." The film "plays like a made-for-CBS redo of The Devil Wears Prada," the director explained.

Dunst made her screenwriting and directorial debut with the short film Bastard, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010 and was later shown at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. In the mystery drama All Good Things (2010), based on the true story of New York real estate developer Robert Durst, whose wife disappeared in 1982, she co-starred opposite Ryan Gosling. The film received good feedback, but it was also a commercial failure, with only $640,000 raised around the world. Roger Ebert lauded Dunst for his ability to capture "a woman at a loss" to figure out who her husband really is and what the true nature of his family reveals. Despite the film's "slow crawl" and lack of suspense, the San Francisco Chronicle praised her performance as "the only one worth watching." Dunst co-starred with Brian Geraghty in Carlos Cuarón's short film The Second Bakery Attack, based on Haruki Murakami's short story, also in 2010.

In Lars von Trier's drama film Melancholia as a woman suffering from depression as the world ends, Dunst co-starred opposite Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, and Charlotte Rampling in 2011. It premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and received largely lauded, especially for Dunst's appearance. "This film has brought the best out of von Trier, as well as his actor," Steven Loeb of Southampton Patch wrote. Dunst is so good in this film, portraying a woman unlike no other she has attempted... And if the film itself isn't the best work of art that it is, Dunst's appearance alone would be reason enough to recommend it." "Dunst is exceptional, so utterly convincing in the lead role" that it feels like a career breakthrough, according to Sukhdev Sandhu of The Daily Telegraph. Dunst has been nominated for many awards for her appearance, including the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival and the Best Actress Award from the United States National Society of Film Critics.

In Beastie Boys' 2011 music film Fight For Your Right Revisited, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Dunst made a cameo. She appeared in Juan Diego Solanas' science fiction romance Upside Down with Jim Sturgess a year later. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star opined that there was no character growth and Dunst "brings expertise but not enthusiasm" for her underwritten roles, despite the fact that it was described as a Romeo and Juliet tale. Rotten Tomatoes' consensus was also negative, with a 28 percent approval rating. Next, she appeared in Leslye Headland's romantic comedy Bachelorette (2012), starring Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson, and Lizzy Caplan; Will Ferrell and Adam McKay produced the film. Regan Crawford is one of three people reunited for the wedding of a friend who was mocked in high school by Dunst. Mixed reactions followed the film; Sara Stewart of the New York Times thought Dunst and Caplan gave good performances and praised the writing despite it being "a little underwhelming" on the laughs. Dunst appeared in On the Road (2012), Jack Kerouac's sequel to the same name, in which she portrays Camille Moriarty. Dunst was first interviewed for the position by director Walter Salles many years ago. On December 21, 2012, the film premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was released in the United States. At the box office, On the Road received mixed feedback and underperformance. Richard Corliss compared On the Road to "a diorama in a Kerouac museum" in a Times magazine, but praises Dunst's performance. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune was more optimistic, awarding the film three out of four actors, praiseing the film's "freak motion and freedom that occasionally makes On the Road make sense and makes it feel alive."

The Two Faces of January (2014) by Hossein Amini was Dunst's first major role, starring Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac. Colette MacFarland, the wife of a con artist, is the subject of Patricia Highsmith's 1964 book of the same name. The Los Angeles Times praised the 1960s Greek setting and claimed that Dunst "brings a potent complexity to Colette," despite mostly positive reviews. Every mood shift registers to the bone. While Jake Wilson of The Sydney Morning Herald praised the script for "condensing the book's plot while still maintaining its spirit," he suspected there was some uneven editing. "Typically teasing yet sympathetic" describes Dunst's appearance. Dunst appeared in the eighth episode of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, and made a guest appearance in a Portlandia episode in 2014. Dunst solely concentrated on television work throughout 2015. Peggy Blumquist, the hairdresser in the second season of the critically acclaimed FX crime drama Fargo, earned her a nomination for Best Actress in the second season.

Dunst appeared in Jeff Nichols' science fiction drama Midnight Special with Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton in 2016. The tale about a father and his eight-year-old son who went on the run after finding that the boy has unexplained powers. The film attracted mostly positive feedback; Tim Grierson of The New Republic was impressed by Midnight Special effects, which imitated a late twentieth century retro style. However, he challenged Dunst's character, saying that he "simply has nothing to do" despite the fact that he doubted its meaning. Dunst was involved in the Biographical drama Hidden Figures (2016), a loose translation of the book of the same name, about African-American mathematicians who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Space Race (NASA). Slant Magazine's Elise Nakhnikian praised Dunst's portrayal of a white boss, but The Guardian thought the film was educational and amusing despite its underdeveloped supporting cast. The film was a commercial success, grossing $236 million worldwide and being nominated for three Academy Awards. In addition, the cast received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Dunst performed as a member of the main competition jury of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival in addition to acting. Dunst had intended to produce an adaptation of Sylvia Plath's book The Bell Jar, starring Dakota Fanning, but she had to cancel before production.

In 2017, Dunst had two film debuts. In The Beguiled, she appeared alongside Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Elle Fanning, marking her third collaboration with Sofia Coppola, who wrote and directed the film. It's a remake of Don Siegel's 1971 film of the same name about a wounded Union soldier who needs protection at an all-girls' academy in the Confederate States. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 79% approval rating, which was "enlivened by good performances from the cast." "Dunst lends the necessary measure of coiled physical longing to her prim spinster," Matthew Norman of the Evening Standard wrote of the "impeccable" acting results, adding, "Dunst lends the desired measure of coiled physical longing to her prim spinster."

Dunst later appeared in Woodshock, a psychological thriller written and directed by her companions, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the Rodarte fashion label's founders. The film is about a woman who falls deeper into depression after taking a lethal drug. The Mulleavys personally approached Dunst for the lead role, which gave Dunst a "emotional safety net" during filming. She was preparing for the role for a year, participating in dream experiments in order to try to recreate the characters' state of mind. Critics had sluggish reception upon its admission. The A.V.'s Katie Rife. The club acknowledged the "sophisticated" cinematography, but the fact that "Character growth and motivation are practically nonexistent, and that the already-thin plot pushes confusion to the point of incoherence." Guy Lodge of Variety shared a similar view of the character, saying, "Dunst has a tradition of inverting depressive sadness to a riveting effect, but the Mulleavys' script doesn't have as varied an emotional or intellectual palette to work with."

Dunst appeared on Showtime's dark comedy television series On Becoming a God in Central Florida in 2019, which premiered in August that year. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and a Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role. Showtime revived the series for a second season in September 2019, but then cancelled it the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dunst co-starred with Jesse Plemons in Jane Campion's film The Power of the Dog, which has been limited theatrical release in the United States on November 17, 2021. Best Supporting Actress and Golden Globe Award nominations were given to her by the Academy Award and Golden Globe Awards.

Music career

Dunst performed two songs written by Marc Shaiman on her debut in the comedy film Get Over It.

That was used in the end credits of The Cat's Meow, she and Henry Creamer and Turner Layton's jazz standard "After You've Gone." Mary Jane Watson appeared in Spider-Man 3, one during a Broadway appearance and another as a singing waitress in a jazz club. Dunst recorded the songs earlier and lip-synced while filming. "I Knew I Loved You," Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise" and R.E.M. featured her in the music videos. On Jason Schwartzman's 2007 solo album Nighttiming, "We All Go Back to Where We Belong" and "Summer Day" were on her album Nighttiming. Dunst denied having the intention to release albums in 2007, saying, "It worked when Barbra Streisand was doing it, but now it's a little cheesy." When singers are in movies, it's much more effective."

In the Takashi Murakami and McG directed short Akihabara Majokko Princess' performing a cover of The Vainist's 1980 hit "Turning Japanese," Dunst appeared as the enchanting princess Majokko. This was on display in London's Tate Modern museum from October 1, 2009 to January 17, 2010. It shows Dunst dancing around Akihabara, Japan's shopping district.

Happy News -- Kirsten Dunst Is Expecting Her First Child With Fiancé Jesse Plemons!

perezhilton.com, December 13, 2017
Baby on board!! Kirsten Dunst is expecting her first child with fianc's Jesse Plemons, according to the newspaper on Wednesday. We’re honestly so happy to report this!!Related: James Corden & Wife Welcome Third Child! This exciting news comes thanks to an Us Weekly source who revealed the pregnancy for the mag's latest issue. Although the lovebirds haven't officially announced their babies, they have already confirmed their engagement. In case you missed it, the Hidden Figures actress benevolently told Jimmy Kimmel that she was betrothed to her ex Fargo costar. Despite this, rumors of the two's marriage were already circulating in January, when the blonde industry vet was seen sporting a diamond sparkler on THAT finger. Next year, the twosome are due to marry in Austin, Texas. Nonetheless, we should have been worrying about Kirsten's potential pregnancy for the longest time. We mean, the A-lister certainly teased the fact that she was ready to become a momma, as she noted in Marie Claire UK’s July 2017 issue: "I'm at a point in my life where I'm like, and I've been working since I was 3. It's time to have babies and chill. I wasn't one of those 'I need a baby!' people didn't know until my goddaughter was born. I adore her so much. That passion is just like óé14; and you won't know it unless you have a child. Last night, I put her to bed, but she woke up this morning and told her mother, 'Where's Kiki?' I just love that love.' That's what I want."
