Career
Reid started his career as a drummer, with his first appearance on record being with the Cincinnati funk rock band Pure Essence. In the mid-1970s, Pure Essence issued one solitary 45. They appeared on local FM rock radio station WEBN's second annual LP compilation, but the group was renamed 'Essence.' Reid will have more success as he entered The Deele, the 1980 R&B band best known for their 1988 hit "Two Occasions," a track from their third album Eyes of a Stranger. The band had broken up before the single's success, but under Dick Griffey's Solar Records, it regained control of the charts. The album debuted at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, with the song debuting at number ten.
Reid and bandmate Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds formed LaFace in 1989 after The Deele disbanded, with funding from Arista Records founder Clive Davis. The label quickly established itself as one of the top destinations for popular African-American entertainers who created Black Pop music that was readily available to both Urban and Top 40 radio formats. Reid converted 14-year-old Usher, the company's six album collections have sold 65 million units around the world. Toni Braxton, TLC, and Outkast are two other well-known acts on the label during its prime. Both TLC and Toni Braxton went on to sell more than 65 million albums per year. The company, which was originally headquartered in Atlanta, was instrumental in the city's music industry.
Reid formed the Hitco Publishing Group in 1996 as a joint venture with Windswept Music. Shakir Stewart, whom Reid, a start-up, was recruited to be with a new breed of producers, songwriters, and talent, according to him. Shakir's first job in the music industry was as a producer at Hitco; he later moved to become a senior vice president of Island Def Jam Music Group.
Edmonds and Reid sold their remaining 50% interest in LaFace to parent company BMG in May 2000. Arista Records' Imprint was created, with Arista taking over sales, marketing, and promotion of its artists. Reid replaced Clive Davis as president of Arista Records at this time.
LaFace was merged into Arista Records in 2000, with Reid being promoted to president and CEO of Arista Records. Reid completed the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program in 1997, in preparation for his role as Arista Records' CEO. Reid introduced Latin rapper Havana Mena and pop/rocker Avril Lavigne to Arista in 2000. Let Go, Avril Lavigne's debut album, released in the United States, has sold 6 million copies. Reid signed artists like Pink (whose debut album Missundaztood sold 5 million copies in the United States) and Ciara (whose debut album Goodies sold 2.5 million copies in the United States) as president of Arista Records in September 2001.
Usher (whom Reid originally signed to LaFace) completed production on his multi-platinum album Confessions in 2004, which has produced four No. 67 celebrities under Reid's tenure. In the United States alone, 1 hit singles and sold 10 million copies. Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below has sold more than ten million copies and received the Grammy Award for Year of the Year.
L.A. Reid was fired from his position at Arista in 2004 and became the chairman and CEO of The Island Def Jam Music Group in February 2004 after the merger between Sony and BMG. Reid is best known for her bringing Mariah Carey's career back to prominence with her multi-platinum 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi, after her career stalled from 2001 to 2003 with less than stellar sales and a general lack of public concern for her two previous projects, Glitter and Charmbracelet.
Reid was also instrumental in the success of musicians such as Kanye West, Rihanna, Bon Jovi, and Justin Bieber, and she was praised for Jennifer Lopez's musical debut with her 2011 album Love. Reid resigned as Chairman/CEO of Island Def Jam in March 2011.

Reid was inducted into the Boys category throughout the competition, assisted by friend and singer Rihanna at the Judges' Houses stage of the tournament in The Hamptons. Marcus Canty, Chris Rene, Astro, and Phillip Lomax were among his final four acts. Lomax was knocked out on week one of the Live Shows, with Astro being eliminated on week six. Marcus Canty finished fourth in the tournament and was ruled out by the public vote in the semi-finals (week eight). Chris Rene was Reid's most popular act in the show, with Josh Krajcik (who was mentored by Nicole Scherzinger) in second place and Melanie Amaro (mentored by Simon Cowell) who took second place. Reid spent time with Astro, Marcus Canty, and Chris Rene on their music careers after the season ended.

New judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato were among the panel members, while Khloé Kardashian and Mario Lopez were displaced as co-hosts. Tate Stevens, the season's champion, was one of Reid's team of finalists in the "over 25's" contest.
Reid revealed in December 2012 that he would not return for the third season in 2013 and was replaced by Kelly Rowland, the former governor of The X Factor UK.
Following Reid's appearance on The X Factor, he began remaking Michael Jackson songs following his death in May 2014, which was one of the projects he embarked on. Reid went through 40 years of Jackson's catalogued songs, as well as eight tracks of Timbaland and J-Roc, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, and John McClain, the former A&M Records executive who is co-executor of the Jackson estate with John Branca. Michael Jackson's originals were recorded from 1983 to 1999, just after Thriller and before Invincible. Xscape has been awarded Gold status.
Reid's book Sing to Me: My Story of Making Music, Finding Magic, and Hunting for Who's Next appeared in 2016. The book has received high marks.
