Kenny Wayne Shepherd's 2021 Blues Music Awards nomination for Best Blues/Rock Artist was withdrawn in March 2021 by the Blues Foundation. The decision was made over Confederate flag graphics on Shepherd's The Dukes of Hazzard "General Lee" vehicle replica, according to a statement by the company.
Shepherd confessed to the flag on his car and said he had covered it permanently some time ago. "Years ago, I put the car in permanent storage, but a few years ago, I made the decision to permanently cover the flag on my car because it was utterly against my beliefs and insulted to the African American community, which is responsible for the music I love so much, and I apologize to anyone that has innocently suffered as a result of it." In addition to Shepherd's acknowledgement, the Foundation has requested Shepherd's father, Ken Shepherd, to resign as a member of the Board of Directors. Ken Shepherd was reluctant to talk about being asked to resign.
Life and career
Shepherd was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport. He is "completely self-taught" and does not read music. Shepherd's father (Ken Shepherd) was a local radio host and some-time concert promoter, and had a large collection of songs as he grew up. Shepherd's first "guitar" came at the age of three or four when his grandmother purchased a series of plastic guitars for his grandmother with S&H Green Stamps, which Shepherd said he would "go through like candy."
Shepherd said in a 2011 interview that he started playing guitar in earnest at the age of seven, about six months after being "pretty mesmerized" by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Labor Day weekend in 1984 at one of his father's promoted concerts, according to him. His self-taught method involved learning one note at a time, playing and rewinding cassette tapes, and learning to play by following along with material from his father's album.
Bryan Lee, a blues musician, was invited to perform onstage. He made demo tapes, and a video was shot at Shepherd's first appearance at the Red River Revel Arts Festival in Shreveport. It was this video performance that attracted Giant Records chief Irving Azoff enough to sign Shepherd to a multi-album contract.
