He was ranked 20 on the NME's 50 Greatest Producers Ever list at number 20.
Early life
Edmonds was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 10, 1959, to Marvin and Barbara Edmonds. Barbara was a plant operator in a pharmaceutical plant. Edmonds, the fifth of six brothers (including future After 7 band members Melvin and Kevon Edmonds, the former of whom went on to have a modestly successful solo career), attended North Central High School in Indianapolis and wrote songs to express his emotions as a youth. Edmonds' father died of lung cancer in eighth grade, leaving his mother to raise her children alone.
Personal life
When she auditioned for his song "Whip Appeal" in 1990, Babyface met Tracey Edmonds. Brandon and Dylan, two sons, were born on September 5, 1992, and they have two sons, Brandon and Dylan. Tracey applied for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court on January 7, 2005, citing irreconcilable inconsistencies as the cause. Babyface and Tracey announced in October 2005 that they were ending their marriage of thirteen years.
Nicole "Nikki" Pantenburg, Babyface's backup dancer and personal friend of Janet Jackson, started dating him in 2007. Payton, Babyface and Pantenburg's daughter, was born in 2008. The two were married on May 17, 2014. They announced in July 2021 that their union would be ending after seven years.
Music career
Bootsy Collins, who referred to him as "Babyface" because of his youthful appearance, was the subject of Edmonds' subsequent encounter. He performed in Manchild (which also included band member Daryl Simmons) as a guitarist in 1977. He performed keyboards and guitar in the Deele, a light-funk and R&B band (which also included drummer Antonio "L.A." Reid, with whom he'll later form a fruitful writing and production team). In 1983, he wrote the song "Slow Jam" for the R&B band Midnight Star, one of his first major credits as a songwriter for outside artists. The song appeared on Midnight Star's 1983 double-platinum No Parking on the Dance Floor album. Babyface remained in the Deele until 1988, when both he and Reid left the company.
There are eight cover songs and two original works on his album Playlist. It was announced on September 18, 2007. It was the first album on Mercury Records' newly re-launched.
On February 4, 2014, he debuted Love, Marriage & Divorce, a Grammy Award-winning duet album with Toni Braxton.
