Kangna Ranaut Life

Kangana Ranaut (born 23 March 1987) is an Indian actress and producer who appears in Hindi films.

She has been named five times in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list, winning three National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards, among other things. Born in Bhambla, a small town in Himalaya, Ranaut aspired to be a doctor at the request of her parents.

She migrated to Delhi at age sixteen, where she briefly appeared as a model, determined to build her own career path.

Ranaut made her debut in the 2006 thriller Gangster, for which she was subsequently recognized with the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut after training under Arvind Gaur.

Woh Lamhe (2006), Life in a... Metro (2006) and Fashion (2008), she was praised for portraying emotionally complex characters in the dramas.

She received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the last two years. Ranaut appeared in the commercially successful films Raaz: The Mysterious (2009) and Once Upon a Time (2009) in Mumbaai, though she was chastised for being typecast in neurotic roles.

In the 2011 commercially lucrative Tanu Weds Manu, a comic role opposite R. Madhavan was well-received, but this was followed by a string of brief, glamorous roles in films that didn't have a chance to propel her career forward.

This changed in 2013 when she coexisted with Hrithik Roshan in the science fiction film Krrish 3, one of India's top-grossing movies.

Ranaut went on to win two consecutive National Film Awards for playing a naive woman in the comedy-drama Queen (2014) and a dual role in Tanu Weds Manu: Returns (2015), the country's most popular Hindi film starring a female protagonist.

She co-directed and played the titular role in the film Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019), after a string of commercial flops. Ranaut is regarded in the media as one of the country's most popular celebrities, and she has started her own clothing line for the brand Vero Moda.

Her public depositions as well as her tumultuous personal and professional relationships have triggered skepticism.

Early life and background

Kangna Amardeep Ranaut was born in Bhambla (now Surajpur), a tiny town in Himalaya's Mandi district, into a Rajput family on March 23, 1987. Asha Ranaut's mother, a school teacher, and her father, Amardeep Ranaut, is a businessman. She has an elder sister, Rangoli Chandel, who works as her boss and a younger brother, Akshat, who works as her boss as of 2014. Sarju Singh Ranaut, her great-grandfather, was a member of the Legislative Assembly, and her grandfather was an inspector for the Indian Administrative Service. She grew up in a joint family's ancestral haveli (mansion) in Bhambla and described her childhood as "simple and joyous."

"I'd not accept a doll or my brother would give my brother a plastic rifle and get a doll for me," Ranaut wrote as a child. "I was suspicious of the discrimination." She did not conform to the stereotypes that were expected of her and experimented with fashion from a young age, often pairing up accessories and clothes that would appear "bizarre" to her neighbors. Ranaut was educated at the DAV School in Chandigarh, where she opted for science as her main subject and was "always worried about [...] findings." She initially planned to become a doctor on the behest of her parents. However, Ranaut's failed unit test in chemistry during her twelfth grade prompted her to reconsider her career prospects, and despite preparing for the All India Pre Medical Test, she did not turn up for the exam. She migrated to Delhi at the age of 16, determined to find her "space and liberty." She's decision not to pursue medicine resulted in constant rivalry with her parents and her father, who refused to finance a cause he deemed as pointless.

Ranaut was uncertain which career to pick in Delhi, India; the Elite Modelling Agency was impressed by her appearance and suggested that she act for them. She did a few modelling jobs, but most of all she disliked the work as she found "no room for creativity." Ranaut turned her attention away from acting and joined the Asmita Theatre Group, where she trained under theatre director Arvind Gaur. She appeared in many of his plays, including the Girish Karnad-scripted Taledanda, at the India Habitat Centre, and appeared in several of his productions, including the Girish Karnad-scripted Taledanda. Ranaut performed her part as a woman during a performance, when one of the male actors went missing. After a positive response from the audience, she moved to Mumbai to pursue a film career, and she enrolled herself in a four-month acting course at Asha Chandra's drama academy.

During this time, Ranaut struggled with her meager income, mainly "bread and achar" was the only thing she ate during this period. She later regretted her father's financial assistance, causing a break in their marriage which she later regretted. Her parents were dissatisfied with her decision to work in filmmaking, and they did not work with her for many years. Since the introduction of Life in a... Metro in 2007, she reconciled with them.

Personal life

Ranaut has claimed that her first years in film were marred with challenges because she was unprepared to be an actor. She was acutely aware of her poor English diction and she was determined to "fit in." Ranaut recalled in a 2013 interview with Daily News and Analysis: 'Recollected' Ranaut recalled:

During the war, Ranaut found love in Aditya Pancholi and his partner Zarina Wahab, who have been "family away from home" and were "part of the household. As the media speculated about the nature of her friendship with Pancholi, she became embroiled in a well-publicized controversy. Despite making several public appearances with him, she refused to discuss it openly. In 2007, it was announced that Ranaut had filed a police complaint accusing Pancholi for physically assaulting her while under the influence of alcohol. Pancholi revealed the affair in a yearly interview, stating that he had been cohabiting with Ranaut in the past and accusing her of owing him 2.5 million (US$31,000). "After physically attacking her in the middle of a road, he has no right to expect anything from her," Ranaut's spokeswoman said, adding that she had "already gave [him] more than $63,000) as a goodwill gesture." Ranaut later reported that the incident had left her "physically and mentally impaired."

Ranaut began a romantic relationship with co-star Adhyayan Suman while filming Raaz: The Mystery Continues in 2008. Suman's insistence that he concentrate on his work resulted, the two separated the following year. Ranaut was involved in a long-distance friendship with Nicholas Lafferty, an English doctor, from 2010 to 2012; she described it as "the most normal" she had, but the pair broke amicably because she wasn't ready for marriage. She has since stated that she would not marry and has expressed a desire not to be bound by a marriage. Hrithik Roshan, her co-star from Krrish 3, filed a court suit against Ranaut alleging cyber stalking and bullying. Ranaut, denying the allegations, filed a counter-charge against Roshan, arguing that his complaint was an effort to conceal their affair from the benefit of his divorce proceedings. Due to a lack of evidence, the lawsuit was dismissed later this year.

Ranaut and her sister Rangoli, who was the victim of an acid attack in 2006, live in Mumbai. She returns to Bhambla every year. Ranaut, a practicing Hindu, follows the spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda's teachings, and believes meditation is the "highest form of worshipping God." In a PETA poll conducted in 2013, she practices vegetarianism and was named as "India's hottest vegetarian." Ranaut has been studying the dance form of kathak from Nateshwar Kundra Mandir since 2009. Ranaut has said that the filmmaking process is of utmost importance to her and that she needs to have a better understanding of it. In 2014, she enrolled in a two-month screenplay writing course at the New York Film Academy. "I don't want to lose my rights as a common person to learn and grow," she said in an interview with Filmfare.

Kangna Ranaut Career

Career

Ramesh Sharma and Pahlaj Nilani, both from India, declared that Ranaut would make her film debut with the Deepak Shivdasani-directed I Love You Boss in 2004. An agent brought her to the producer Mahesh Bhatt's office, where she collaborated with director Anurag Basu and auditioned for the lead role in the romantic drama Gangster: A Love Story. Bhatt felt she was too young for the role and chose Chitrangada Singh instead. Singh was later found to do the film, and Ranaut was hired as a replacement for Gangster after opting out of I Love You Boss. Simran, an alcoholic woman trapped in a romantic feud between a notorious gangster (Shiney Ahuja) and a sympathetic friend (Emraan Hashmi), was played in the central role. Ranaut was only seventeen when filming and claimed that she "had trouble first in comprehending and then unwinding from the character," referring to her craft as "raw and immature." Gangster became a symbol of hope and commercial achievement after being launched in 2006. "Kangana is a remarkable find, with the actress coming across with a lot of confidence," Raja Sen of Rediff.com said. Along with several other debut awards, she received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Ranaut's next film appearance was in the Mohit Suri-directed drama Woh Lamhe (2006), a semi-biographical film based on Parveen Babi's schizophrenic actress Parveen Babi and her friendship with director Mahesh Bhatt. As she had started to "feel her desolation and loneliness," she said portraying Babi had left her emotionally drained. Ranaut was the first Bollywood actress since Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi, "who isn't afraid to strip her soul naked for the camera," she wrote, adding that she is a "hugely expressive actress with a natural ability to convey grief, pain, and incredulity through the eyes." Despite positive reviews, the film at the box office did not do well.

In Suneel Darshan's musical thriller Shakalaka Boom Boom Boom, Ranaut played an aspiring singer, Assassinating Celina Jaitly, Bobby Deol, Upen Patel, and Celina Jaitly. Ranaut and Darshan's dialogue was marred; she protested her voice being dubbed by another artist, but she maintained that her character needed a particular "twang and accent" for her character. The film, according to India Today, was a "momento mess" and the film turned into a box office flop. Neha, a shrewd socialite embroiled in a shrewd socialite embroiled in an affair with her married boss (Kay Menon), was reunited with Anurag Basu for the ensemble drama Life in a... Metro. Despite a slow start to the box office, the film became a profitable venture. Khalid Mohamed of the Hindustan Times was critical of the film, citing its lack of originality and realism. Raja Sen wrote a more positive review that Ranaut "is refreshing [...] and sheds her emotions well, playing a diverse role but not terribly overreaching," but wrote an English line. Ranaut was given the Stardust Award for her role as the Female Stardust Award for her female role.

In Dhaam Dhoom (2008), a Tamil romantic drama starring Jayam Ravi, Ranaut portrayed a village girl. When the producer, Jeeva, died of cardiac arrest, film production was temporarily suspended, and the crew members completed the film. According to a report published by the Post, Ranaut had "little scope" in a role that did not suit her. The drama Fashion (2008), India Today's next film, the drama Fashion (2008), was a "landmark" in her career. Shonali Gujral, a substance abusing supermodel struggling to cope with her foundering career, is featured in the film, set against the backdrop of the Indian fashion industry. Since the media ruminated that her role was based on former Geetanjali Nagpal (which Ranaut denied), the Delhi Commission for Women ordered a stay on the film's release, but only after a script narration. Fashion was a commercial success with a worldwide audience of 600 million (US$7.5 million). Ranaut's performance received unanimous critical acclaim. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama praised her brave portrayal of the role, while Nikhat Kazmi said she "does an exquisite metamorphosis from a wispy, high-strung, anxious mother to a stunning ramp diva." Ranaut's performance received her many accolades, including the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The supernatural horror film Raaz: The Mysteries Continues from director Mohit Suri's first film release in 2009, in which she played a wealthy model who is possessed by a ghost. Emraan Hashmi and Adhyayan Suman co-starred in the film and proved to be a financial success. Ranaut was becoming stereotyped in roles that required her to be "hysterical," according to Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express, who also said that she needed a "radical change of appearance." She appeared in the drama Vainda Raha and the Telugu action film Ek Niranjan, neither of which were particularly notable.

Ranaut played the fiancée of Hrithik Roshan's character for a brief period in Anurag Basu's romantic thriller Kitees (2010). As her role was much smaller than what she had expected, she said she felt "cheated" after watching the movie. Rehana appeared in the Milan Luthria-directed gangster film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. The film, which also stars Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, and Prachi Desai, chronicles an underworld don's ascension and subsequent death in the 1970s. Ranaut said her character was "a mix" of the actress Madhubala and Haji Mastan's wife, and that, she had watched the actresses Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi's work in preparation. The film was one of the year's best-selling films and received lauding comments from critics. Sudhish Kamath of The Hindu called her a "delight" and Sarita Tanwar of Mid-Day praised her for her "totally convincing" in the role. Ranaut, a television reporter in Knock Out, wanted to make a comeback and became involved in Anee's No Problem, but her career hasn't progressed.

Ranaut, who is best known for portraying neurotic characters, wants to work on a "less physically exhausting" role, according to Bollywood Hungama. Tanu Weds Manu, a romantic comedy opposite R. Madhavan that Ranaut describes as a "game changer" for her, was her first appearance of 2011. Rai said he chose her for the role to show that the actress was capable of playing other roles and that her character in the film was unlike any of those she had performed before. Ranaut's performance was lauded, but critical reactions to the film were mixed, although Ranaut's appearance was lauded. "Kangana Ranaut is a pleasant surprise in a cheery, upbeat area that we hadn't seen before," Rajeev Masand wrote. She rises to the challenge, but her mangled dialogue delivery is only limited occasionally." Multiple award ceremonies, including Screen and Zee Cine, all awarded Ranaut, including Screen and Zee Cine, received Best Actress nominations.

Ranaut followed Tanu Weds Manu's triumph by appearing in a string of brief, glamorous roles in four other films of 2011: Game, Double Dhamaal, Rascals, Miley Naa Miley Hum. No of these films, with the exception of Double Dhamaal, did well. Gaurav Malani of The Times of India wrote: "Kangana Ranaut is ill at ease in comedy." She struggles to hold her own and emerges as a bimbo in her performance. Ranaut later said that she did some of these films due to a dearth of film opportunities. Ranaut starred in Priyadarshan's Priyadarshan's action thriller Tezz, another box office flop, over the next year.

Sanjay Gupta played Ranaut in a brief role opposite John Abraham in the crime thriller Shootout at Wadala (2013) due to her ability to stand out in a largely male-centric film. Tushar Joshi of Daily News and Analysis wrote that her job was written "to increase the sexquotient" and that analyst Vinayak Chakravorty opined that "does not get much scope [...] outside of the tense lovemaking grind." The film did moderately well on commercials.

In Rakesh Roshan's science fiction film Krrish 3, Ranaut played a shapeshifting mutant, alongside Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, and Vivek Oberoi. She initially declined the bid due to her dissatisfaction with her involvement in Kites, which Rakesh Roshan produced. Roshan approached Ranaut once more after other actresses had turned down the role, and she eventually accepted. Critics agreed that Krrish 3 was amusing but that originality was lacking, but her presence earned her accolades. "She is delightful as an alien doing the strange hair and clothing jobs for her," Sarita Tanwar of Daily News and Analysis said. She also manages to make you feel her pain.

Quite an accomplishment that!"

It earned over $33 billion (US$38 million) worldwide, becoming Ranaut's most profitable venture. Ranaut took the lead in the musical thriller Rajjo's later performance, a critical and commercial failure. The portrayal of a nautch child was largely mocked, with Rediff.com's Paloma Sharma saying she "struggles with her Mumbaiya dialogues and is not as graceful in the dance sequences as one would have hoped."

Ranaut made a name for herself in Hindi cinema in 2014 as she appeared in the upcoming-of-age film, as she co-wrote the dialogues with Anvita Dutt Guptan. Rani, a naive teenager who embarks on her honeymoon alone after her fiancé (Rajkummar Rao) calls off their wedding. Ranaut, who describes herself as "independence and secure," remarked that the role was one of the most difficult she had ever played as the character's personality contrasted with her own. Critics have lauded the film and Ranaut's performances. According to Devesh Sharma of Filmfare, "flitting from one aspect of her character to another without breaking stride shows her maturity as an actor." The film premiered as a box office hit, and she received both the Filmfare Award and the National Film Award for Best Actress for it. In the political drama Ungli, Ranaut followed the success by portraying an adamant politician in the black comedy Revolver Rani and as a medical intern. She made her English language short film The Touch, dealing with a four-year-old boy and a dog; she co-wrote the screenplay with an Australian writer and shot it in America earlier this year.

Ranaut appeared in Tanu Weds Manu, a sequel to Tanu Weds Manu, in which she appeared in multiple roles, for which she played dual roles; she also portrayed an aspiring actor in the film. She interacted with students of the University of Delhi disguised in disguise; in addition, she attended workshops to learn the Haryanvi language and gained experience in triple jump, preparing for the second role. Critics and Ranaut's review of the film said it was regarded as the film's best asset. Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan praised her for perfecting the body languages and accents of the two women, and Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV reported that "fleshes out this pair of distinct characters with such ferocity and finesse that it becomes impossible to tell that it is the same actor playing both roles." Tanu Weds Manu Returns' earnings over 2.4 billion (US$30 million) worldwide, making the most lucrative Bollywood film starring a female protagonist. Ranaut received a Best Actress Award from Filmfare and his second straight National Film Award for Best Actress, as well as an additional Best Actress nomination at Filmfare.

Ranaut appeared in the romantic comedies I Love NY (a production postponed since 2013) and Nikkhil Advani's Katti Batti, both of which failed at the box office, in 2015. The actress played Imran Khan as a cancer patient, a role for which critic Uday Bhatia of Mint said she "lack[ed] the kind of character she had in her previous roles.

Julia, a 1940s heroine and stunt woman in Vishal Bhardwaj's romance Rangoon (2017), after a year absence from the screen, was cast as Julia, a 1940s hero and stunt woman. Fearless Nadia, Ranaut, a model who was based on an "amalgamation of many characters" from the time, and she was especially drawn to the "fierceness and sensuality" in her. She learned horse riding and sword fighting as well as staged her own stunts. According to media reports, there was a feud between Ranaut and Kapoor, and although they denied it, both actors openly criticizing each other. Rangoon's results were generally favorable, with praise paid to Ranaut's achievements. Ranaut's Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times described him as "terrific," and NDTV named Ranaut as one of the year's best actresses. She was nominated for the Best Actress award at the Filmfare Critics Conference. Ranaut appeared in Simran, a crime comedy starring Hansal Mehta, in which she played a Gujarati immigrant in the United States involved in criminal investigations. Asrani praised Ranaut and Mehta for failing to recognize his contributions to the script, but Asrani chastised them for not valuing his script contributions. Ranaut's success in Simran was lauded. Both Rangoon and Simran were dissatisfied at the post office.

Ranaut received the Best Actress Award for Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019) and Panga (2020). She appeared as a co-director on Rani of Jhansi's film after often clashing with the actor. Sonu Sood, her co-star, also left the role due to her differences with her. Ranaut reshot a significant portion of the film, owing to which the film's cost doubled. Rajeev Masand said the film was "a deliberately simple film; an old-fashioned patriotic saga told in the broadest of strokes; and with utter nationalist zeal," but Ranaut praised her for "command[ing] the screen with a fiery, arresting presence, never letting your gaze wander away from her." It did moderately well at the box office. Ranaut reunited with Rajkummar Rao in the black comedy Judgementall Hai Kya, in which she played a mentally ill woman in her second film release of the year. Madhavi Pothukuchi, a box office intern, lauded her for her portraying "all the hues with expertise." Both actors received Filmfare Award nominations for their appearances.

With Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's sports film Panga, Ranaut began the new decade. She portrayed a young mother and homemaker who is returning from a comeback in kabaddi. The film, as well as Ranaut's appearance in it, received critical attention; Anupama Chopra of Film Companion praised her sensitivity in her role. In 2020, Ranaut founded Manikarnika Films, and the next year, she and Arvind Swamy appeared in the film Thalaivia (2021), in which she and Arvind Swamy played the actor-turned-politicians J. Jayalaa and M. G. Ramachandran, respectively. Critics generally praised her performance, but most liked the film. Baradwaj Rangan said Jayalalithaa "channels and imitates the poverty, the disappointments, and the fact that it was still a woman in politics"; in contrast, Srivatsan S. of The Hindu said she was more involved in the role than Ranaut's.

In 2022, Ranaut hosted Lock Upp, the reality show on Alt Balaji and MX Player, becoming the most viewed reality show in Indian OTT space. She appeared in the action film Dhaakad that she played a spy. It was Ranaut's eighth box office bomb out of her last nine films, with publications such as Bollywood Hungama and Box Office India noting her declining success.

In Alaukik Desai's The Incarnation: Sita, Ranaut will next portray an Indian Air Force pilot in Sarvesh Mewara, Indira Gandhi's second directorial venture, Emergency, and Sita. Sheru will also make Tiku Weds Sheru, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur.
