Early life
Rothe was born in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Susan and Steve Rothenberg. Rothe's father is Jewish. Colleen Rothenberg, her paternal grandmother, was a theatre actress who attended Congregation Shomrei Torah synagogue in Santa Rosa, California.
When she was eight years old, Rothe took ballet lessons. She attended summer theater camps in Kansas City as a youth. Rothe earned her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 2009 and then Boston University, and during that time she learned to play the violin, tap dance, and pottery.
