Personal life
On September 11, 2017, Kang began his mandatory military service at the Nonsan Korean Army Training Center. On October 24, Kang was commended for his outstanding results in basic training during the graduation ceremony. Kang was elected honorary ambassador of the Military Manpower Administration on February 22, 2019. (MMA) The ceremony took place at the Air Force Hall in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Kang, as an honorary ambassador, appeared in MMA-sponsored activities until December 2019. Kang was discharged on May 23, 2019.
Career
Kang began his career in musical theatre, including in Thrill Me (2010), Prince Puzzle (2011), Black Mary Poppins (2012), and Assassins (2012). He later returned to film, appearing in the television dramas To the Beautiful You (2012), The Heirs (2013), and Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014).
Kang made a busy year in 2015, appearing in three films; musical film C'est si bon, period film Empire of Lust; and the coming-of-age film Twenty, for which he gained several Best New Actor awards and nominations.
Kang appeared in Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet, a black and white period film in which he played the titular role of poet Yun Dong-ju. At the 25th Buil Film Awards and 4th Wildflower Film Awards, Yun Dong-ju's appearance earned him Best Actor nominations. He appeared in Like for Likes, a romantic comedy film about a young songwriter with a hearing impairment. He co-starred in the historical drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, starring 8th Prince Wang Wook, which earned him the Excellence Award at the 2016 SBS Drama Awards.
Kang starred in the film New Trial in 2017, portraying a young man who spent a decade in jail for a felony he did not commit in 2017. He appeared in the action comedy film Midnight Runners, alongside Park Seo-joon, as a nerdy student of the Korean National Police University. The film was a success, becoming the 4th highest-grossing South Korean film in 2017. He appeared in the same year as Kim Mu-yeol in the mystery thriller film Forgotten.
Kang co-starred with fellow actor Ji Chang-wook and K-Pop idol Kim Sung-kyu from Infinite in September 2018. The musical is considered one of the Republic of Korea Army's most popular programs, with cumulative audiences totaling to 110,000 viewers. Kang has been nominated for Best Actor at the 7th Yeld Musical Awards for his role as Paldo.
In the KBS2 television series When the Camellia Blooms starring Gong Hyo-jin, Kang made a comeback in the entertainment industry in 2019. He was confirmed to appear in the thriller thriller film Streaming, in which Kang's character runs a well-known YouTube channel focused on criminal profiling.
