Justin Sane Life

Justin Cathal Geever, better known as Justin Sane (Born February 21, 1973), is the lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter of the United States-based musical group Anti-Flag, a punk rock band formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known for its outspoken left-wing views.

He holds dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland and lives in Pittsburgh.

Friends in Pittsburgh's punk scene bestowed him with his stage name.

Early life

Sane was born as the youngest child in an Irish-American family and draws on his parents' example. His parents were vegetarians and they opened the first vegetarian restaurant in Pittsburgh, inspiring Sane to become a vegan and animal rights activist. He saw his parents march in rallies as a child, and as he got older he participated.

Lucy Sane's uncle gave him his first guitar, which led him to punk rock and hardcore. Sane's first album was about a young person overdosing, and his second was about televangelists.

Sane formed Anti-Flag with Pat Thetic, a friend of 1988. Die for the Government, the government's first album, was released in 1996. Andy Flag left the band later this year due to personal rifts. Various band members came and went through 1997 to 1998, after which they finally settled on a permanent lineup that included Sane, as lead guitarist/vocalist, Chris Head as guitarist/backing vocalist, and Chris "#2" Barker as bassist/second vocalist. The band's second album, Their System Doesn't Work For You, was released in 1998.

Anti-Flag released A New Kind of Army, their third album, in 1999, and founded A-F Records, the company's own brand. After extensive talks with the label's owner, "Fat Mike" Burkett, in 2001, they signed to Fat Wreck Chords. The band formed Underground Network following their move to Fat Wreck Chords.

Mobilize, which was released shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, was announced shortly after. Bouncing Souls was released on a split CD by Anti-Flag seven months later. The Terror State, directed by Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, was released in 2003. Death of a Nation, Anti-Flag's first DVD, was released in 2004. The DVD features a live stream, three music videos, an interview with the band, a behind-the-scenes tour video, and three montages assembled by the band.

On RCA Records, an Anti-Flag project for Blood and Empire was launched in 2006. In 2008, The Brilliant Lights of America was published.

Sane migrated to East End, London, in May 2008, but he later returned to Pittsburgh.

Sane jumped into the audience at a concert at the LCR in Norwich on March 4, 2009, to stop a scuffle that broke out and landed awkwardly, breaking his collar bone. Anti-Flag was forced to postpone the remainder of their tour with Rise Against and their forthcoming headlining tour of Europe, which caused Anti-Flag to cancel the remainder of their tour. Rise Against was released on a 2 track split album the year before, but not everyone was given away with any merchandise purchase on the 2009 Rise Against/Anti-Flag/Flobots UK tour.

Sane primarily uses ESP and LTD Eclipses, but it has become almost exclusively used after becoming an ESP endorser. Sane has used Gibson Les Pauls in the past. Sane's most popular Marshall amp heads include JCM800s, 900s, & 2000s, and Marshall 1960 cabs. On recent trips, Sane and Head have used Orange and Hiwatt amplifiers and cabinets.

Sane graduated from The Oakland School in Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in communications and minoring in political science.

Various solo albums, such as 2001's six-track EP, have been released by Sane. These are the Days and 2003's Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Justice. These recordings mainly focus on love, family, and more everyday life rather than the politically charged position of Anti-Flag.
