Jung Woo-sung is a South Korean actor, director, producer, and model who was the first Korean UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. He moved to acting and then teenage cult fame with the 1997 Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, winning "Best New Actor" at the 17th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, after beginning his career as a model.

He has appeared in films like City of Madness, Trade Your Love, Scarlet Innocence, and Beasts Clawing at Straws, a Good Rain Knows: The Wolf Brigade, Born to Kill, The King of Assassins, The Good, the Bad, and the Weird. Jung Woo-sung is best known for his television roles including in the espionage drama series Athena: Goddess of War, Yang Kang-chil in the romantic fantasy series Padam Padam, Kang Dong-suk, and Park Sam-soo in the legal crime drama series Delayed Justice, apart from his film career, but besides film work, he's also known for his television appearances, including actor Lee Jung-woo.

Early life

Jung grew up in Sadang-dong, later becoming one of Seoul's poorest towns. He stopped studying and dropped out of high school after a year, and instead worked to support the family budget. He never denied or regretted doing so. He was tall in elementary school, and his height caused him to yell constantly. He was told he was too tall to be a model when trying to break into film, so he started as a model.

Personal life

Lee Jung-jae, whom he met while filming City of the Rising Sun, is his best friends. They are co-owners and co-investors of many companies, including management firm Artist Company.

The actor is notoriously private about his intimate affairs. Lee Ji-ah, Athena's short-lived relationship, was the only one he publicly admitted so far. Jung revealed in March 2011 that they were dating after being photographed on a date in Paris. Jung and Lee were broken up after Lee's marriage and divorced relationship with top Korean singer-songwriter Seo Taiji, the Korean press announced in June that they had broken up. Despite this and contrary to several other South Korean mega stars, Jung's life is untaught by any scandals, and he is often praised by fellow filmmakers for his coworkability and willingness to assist junior colleagues on the set. He is known for picking up the tab whether he or his coworkers are eating or ordering meals for the entire crew.

Jung, George Nae and Lee Jung-jae both donated 100 million won to the Hope Bridge Disaster Relief Association on March 8, 2022, to assist the victims of the massive wildfire in Uljin, Gyeongbuk, which has since spread to Samcheok, Gangwon.

Jung and Lee Jung-jae joined the Hope Bridge Honors Club, a group of major contributors with more than 100 million dollars as a result.

Career

Jung Woo-sung made his film debut in 1994's The Fox with Nine Tails, one of the first Korean fantasy films to use computer-generated images, and the first to use computer-generated images. He appeared alongside actor Ko So-young, who later co-starred with him twice, including in his breakthrough 1997 film Beat. Beat by Kim Sung-su is a tale about a high school student who was forced into gang life. Jung gained acclaim for his role as Korea's top-selling actor and one of the most in-demand commercial models.

In 1999, he appeared in City of the Rising Sun as an unsuccessful boxer forming an association with an unlucky swindler. Actor Lee Jung-jae, his co-lead in the film, became his lifelong pal.

Jung played in Phantom: The Submarine and a marathoner in Love later.

Musa's third collaboration with director Kim Sung-su was released in 2001. Jung performed alongside Chinese actor Zhang Ziyi and gained a lot of exposure in the world as well as in Korea. Jung played the eccentric lead role in Mutt Boy, the fifth film directed by Kwak Kyung-taek, after spending time in 2002 producing a series of music videos and being seen in a large number of commercials.

Jung's next appearances were in highly romantic roles that used his established screen image. He played an architect with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, and in the Netherlands-set Daisy, he played an architect who falls in love with a street artist played by Jun Ji-hyun. In The Restless, he portrayed a happily committed fireman in Sad Movies and played a demon hunter looking for lost love.

"kimchi western" by Kim Jeewoon The Good, the Bad, the Weird's interpretation, will be one of Jung's most popular roles. In The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, he used his physical appearance to great effect as his Clint Eastwood counterpart. The film was screened out of competition at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, which also marked its world premiere. Jung and his co-stars appeared at the festival together. At the 2008 Hawaii International Film Festival, he received Best Supporting Actor and Outstanding Achievement in Acting. Jung appeared on a short film for W Korea shortly after.

In Hur Jin-ho's romance film A Season of Good Rain and Su Chao-pin's martial arts film Reign of Assassins with Michelle Yeoh, Jung appeared alongside Chinese actress Gao Yuanyuan.

Jung was cast in the 3D version of John Woo's The Killer, which was shot in 2011. The film was supposed to be shot in Los Angeles and reunite him with Reign of Assassins producer John Woo as producer. The project has been suspended while John Woo is filming another one. However, the scheme has yet to take off.

In his first villain role in Cold Eyes, an action thriller that became a box office hit in 2013, Jung drew praise. He portrayed the brutal head of a bank robbery company specializing in bank robbery, eluding the detectives to pursue him with utter zeal.

In The Divine Move, Jung next played a baduk player seeking revenge, then an adulterous university professor slowly losing his eyesight in Scarlet Innocence. Scarlet Innocence's world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival was met with encouraging reviews from critics. He was later featured in the melodrama indie film Don't Forget Me, also known as Remember Me, a reimagining of the 2010 short film Remember O Goddess, directed by Lee Yoon-jung. Jung had also co-produced this film, stating that he wanted to shield the director's original ideas that other producers wanted to change.

He appeared in Asura: The City of Madness, his fourth collaboration with director Kim Sung-su. Jung played a crooked detective who is attempting to save his terminally ill wife while deposing a corrupt town mayor. In September, 2016, Asura premiered worldwide at the 41st Toronto Film Festival, where it was shown in the Special Presentations section. Han Jae-rim's second film shot in 2016 and 2017 was his second film project, which revolved around a senior prosecutor being tricked by an overambitious younger colleague connected to the mafia.

In 2017, Jung plays a former agent from North Korea's intelligence service in Steel Rain. In Illang: The Wolf Brigade, an elite police unit, he served as an officer of the elite police unit. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, director Kim Jee-woon's second film collaboration.

In 2019, he is supposed to appear in Innocent Witness as a lawyer. The Baeksang Arts Awards have trophies for his work. He appeared in the thriller Beasts that Cling to the Straw for the same year.

Jung appeared in Steel Rain's sequel, Steel Rain 2: Summit, in 2020. In Lee's debut, spy thriller Hunt, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, Jung starred alongside Lee Jung-jae.

Jung appeared in his first major television role in SBS drama series Asphalt Man in 1995, portraying an aspiring racer who moved to the United States to fulfill his dream. The role not only elevated his fame but also earned him critical acclaim with the Best New Actor award at the 32nd Baeksang Arts Awards and SBS Drama Awards, but also at the 32nd Baeksang Arts Awards and SBS Drama Awards.

After 15 years of absence in the big-budget spy series Athena: Goddess of War, Jung returned to the small screen in 2010 as a NTS (National Anti-Terror Service) agent. Athena was a spin-off on the 2009 highly popular KBS2 drama IRIS. The film was shot on location in Italy, New Zealand, Japan, and the United States, with a budget of 20 billion (US$17 million). The show appeared on SBS channel, with its pilot episodes grossing 21.8 percent of the audience share. During filming in January 2011, Jung and another actor were injured, causing the postponement of one of Athena's episodes for a week. The film was also turned into a two-hour film version and released in 2011 as Athena: The Movie.

He made his Japanese drama debut with a guest appearance in episodes 6 and 7 of Good Life. Arigatou, Papa. Sayonaras name was given.

Jung starred in another TV series Padam, which marked the debut of JTBC, the nation's new cable television broadcasting station. Jung said he "decided on this drama because (he) was drawn to Noh Hee-kyung's 'family romance,' If mother-son or father-son, the joy and agony experienced by families is something (he)'d like to try portraying in a realistic way." After serving a 16-year prison term for a felony he did not commit, he played a man who was recently released from jail. On December 5, 2011, the film premiered.

He replaced Bae Seung-woo for the leading role in Deayed Justice on SBS television show Delayed Justice in December 2020. In 2021, Jung appeared as an executive producer on Netflix's The Silent Sea, and in 2022 he'll star in a Japanese drama Say Me to Love Me.

In 2000, Jung decided to try his hand at directing. His first projects for one of South Korea's top pop music company G.o.d. He supervised and appeared in the commercial for cable television channel XTM in 2012. Jung was one of four celebrities to produce a short film based on Samsung Galaxy S4's smartphone. His short Love explored the first love of his first love and received over 1.8 million views on YouTube. He made another short film for Samsung Galaxy S4, this time for the project "Story of Me and S4." Choi Jin-hyuk starred as an ordinary office worker dreaming of leaving his mundane existence and entering a world of dreams; he is approached by a blue fish, races a sports car at breakneck speed, hangs out with a hippie band in their van, and meets himself as a young boy at a bus stop in Jung's short Beginning of a Dream.

Jung, alongside actor Francis Ng and Chang Chen, produced three short films for Three Charmed Lives, the Hong Kong International Film Festival's omnibus. Critics praised Jung's short story "The Killer Behind the Old Man" as the best and most stylish entry. A son recruits an ultra-methodical hitman (played by Andy Choi) to murder his own father, but the killer nevertheless finds himself trapped by the man's slow-moving and ordered existence, and therefore doesn't continue with his mission. In November 2014, Jung was invited to discuss The Killer Behind the Old Man at the 9th London Korean Film Festival.

Kim Nam-gil, Park Sung-woong, and Kim Jun-han were among his debuting a film at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere in September 2022.
