June Brown Life

June Muriel Brown (born 16 February 1927) is an English actress best known for her appearance as Dot Cotton in the BBC soap opera EastEnders from 1985 to 1996.

She received the Best Actress award at the Inside Soap Awards in 2005, and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards was given in the same year.

In 2009, she was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress, but she lost out to Anna Maxwell Martin.

She is the second actress to be nominated for her work in a soap opera by the British Academy (the first was Jean Alexander). In the 2008 Birthday Honours for services to Drama and Charity, she was named Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Early life

Brown was born in Needham Market, Suffolk, on February 16, 1927, one of five children of Louisa Ann (née Butler) and Henry William Melton Brown. Her ancestry consisted of English, Irish, and Scottish, as well as her maternal grandmother, Sephardic Jewish (from Algeria, the Netherlands, and Italy). She was descendant from noted Jewish bare-knuckle boxer Isaac Bitton through her grandmother.

Brown was educated at St John's Church of England School in Ipswich and later gained a scholarship to Ipswich High School, where she passed the school certificate examinations. She was evacuated to Pontyates, Welsh village in Carmarthenshire, during the Second World War. She served in the Wrens and was classically trained at the Old Vic Theatre School in Lambeth, London, during the war.

Personal life

Brown met and married actor John Garley in 1950; he suffered from depression and died from suicide in 1957. She married actor Robert Arnold in 1958. They had six children in seven years, one of whom died in infancy. The couple were together for 45 years before he died of Lewy-body dementia in 2003. She lived alone in Surrey for the remainder of her life.

Brown, a Conservative Party supporter, told The Guardian in 2009, "I would not vote Labour, dear, if you paid me." "I vote for Conservatives." She was a Christian, as she portrayed in her EastEnders role.

In the 2008 New Year Honours, Brown was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours and Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), both for service to drama and to charities.

Brown died on April 3r, 2022, at the age of 95. On the day of Brown's death, the EastEnders paid their respects to Brown by sharing condolences from several of her former co-stars, including Gillian Taylforth, Natalie Cassidy, Lacey Turner, Diane Parish, Emma Barton, Adam Woodyatt, and Letitia Dean. The episode, which was later that evening, was dedicated to her in memory. The documentary June Brown: A Walford Legend, which premiered in 2017 to commemorate Brown's 90th birthday and her 2011 film What Do You Think About Me? were broadcast on BBC One in a change from the original program.

June Brown Career

Career

Brown's long-running television career, with small appearances in Coronation Street as Mrs Parsons (1970–71); the Inebriate Woman as Clara (1971), Edna (1970–74); the Doctor Who story The Time Warrior (1973–74); and the cult sci-fi series Survivors. Mrs Leyton appeared in The Duchess of Duke Street (1976), and she appeared in Oliver Twist (1985).

In 2000, she appeared in Nanny Slagg's big-budget production of Gormenghast. She appeared in several films, including The Mummy Kings (1971), Sitting Target (1972), Mr. Bean's (1990), and the Mr. Bean film spin-off Bean (1999). In Straw Dogs (1971), she appeared as Tom Hedden's wife, but her scenes were removed from the film. In 1984, she appeared in the television mini-series Lace, which starred actress Phoebe Cates.

Brown performed at the Children's Party at the Palace in 2006, an all-star event to commemorate the Queen's 80th birthday. Brown appeared in the annual Christmas special of Strictly Come Dancing in 2010. "I'm afraid and anxious about what I've allowed myself to do." Brown said, "I'm afraid and worried about what comes over me." I just hope I can recall the steps back to the routines. I'm looking forward to working with the professional dancers and the other contestants." Vincent Simone, her dancing companion, performed the tango with whom she performed the tango.

Who Do You Think You Are? in August 2011, she was among the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? And was the first person to have enrolled on the program.

Respect Your Elders, Brown's BBC documentary, which examined how culture treats the elderly and attitudes toward the elderly.

Brown was also active in British theatre. In London, she produced and appeared in Pin Money by Malcolm Needs, as well as Double D by Matthew Westwood in Edinburgh and London. In a touring version of Rebecca, she played Mrs Danvers. An Inspector Calls, The Lion in Winter, A View from the Bridge, and numerous pantomimes are among the plays. She appeared in Hedda Gabler and Lady Macbeth during her early career.

In 2009, Brown appeared Jessie in the West End production of Calendar Girls at the No.l Coward Theatre. Anita Dobson (Angie Watts), Jill Halfpenny (Kate Mitchell) and Jack Ryder were among the actors in the drama.

Leslie Grantham, one of the original cast members of EastEnders, was recommended to producers for the role of Dot Cotton in EastEnders by Den Watts. Brown starred from 1985 to 2020, with a break between 1993 and 1997.

Brown became the first and, to date, only soap actor to carry a complete episode single-handed on January 31, 2008. Following a stroke, the episode, titled "Pretty Baby," featured a monologue about her character's life. Jim's husband Jim was forced to listen to a cassette machine in hospital. The fact that co-star and close friend John Bardon (who portrayed Jim) was recovering from a stroke in real life gave the episode an extra pathos. Brown was nominated for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress in 2009. Brown's appointment came as a result of her "single-hander" episode of EastEnders, which she praised.

Brown was set to take a six-month break from EastEnders and planned to write her autobiography during her absence on May 30, 2012. She had returned to filming in October 2012, and she appeared on screen again in January 2013. In 2013, her autobiography, Before the Year Dot, was published.

Brown revealed in May 2015 that her eyesight was fading as a result of macular degeneration. A storyline for Dot in 2016 where her eyesight was fading was published later this year. Brown, who spoke to the disease in April 2019, said that it had worsened since undergoing eye surgery in 2017 and that she did not go out socially due to her eyesight: "I never go to soap awards or suchlike now." I don't know people that I know and they'd suspect me of snubbing them."

Brown revealed she had left EastEnders on February 20, 2020.
