Julian Cheung Chi-lam (born 27 August 1971), better known by his stage name Chilam, is a Hong Kong singer and actress.
Cheung is best known for his role as Guo Jing in the 1994 television series adaptation of the Wuxia novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes, as well as Chi-Kin from the TVB drama Cold Blood Warm Heart (1996). Cheung debuted his first single, "A Modern Love Story" with Maple Hui in 1991, and has since been the only artist to sell the most copies for a debut album under IFPI.
Cheung received the Best Newcoming Singer (Bronze) award in 1992 for his first album (Bronze).
Cheung received two coveted awards from TVB in 2000 for the drama Return of the Cuckoo. Cheung has earned 60 million HKD in 2014.
Early life
Cheung, who was born in Hong Kong on August 27, 1971, spent the bulk of his childhood in Hong Kong attending an all-male Catholic primary school. He later attended a Protestant secondary school. He has an elder sister and a younger sister. He was 13 when his parents divorced, and he and his father immigrated to Australia when he was 15. He attended Pendle Hill High School in Sydney. His parents remarried in 1986, but he divorced a second time later. He was an excellent actor and comedian, but his father thought he had a gift and sent him to an acting academy.
Personal life
Julian is married to Hong Kong actress Anita Yuen. They have a son together, who was born in 2006. They met in the 1990s in a music video they did together, and by that time, they were in the midst of their Hong Kong entertainment careers, and then publicly announced their union in 1994. In 2001 in San Francisco, California, they unethically wedded. Anita reported in 2021 that they tried to have another child, but that all attempts failed, including in vitro fertilisation.
Career
Cheung was 19 years old when he visited Hong Kong during his summer holiday and was reunited with his cousin and childhood friend Anna Ueyama (). Anna introduced Cheung to his first boss, Tony. Tony was immediately signed into IFPI and began to instruct him after being impressed with Cheung's voice. Cheung released his first song, a duet album with Hong Kong singer Maple Hui (). The first single, "A Modern Love Story," was released by Fitto in 1991 and was a huge success. This single was on the IFPI Album Sales Chart for 11 weeks, and as of today, holds the IFPI record for newcomer singers.
Cheung also appeared in his first television series, Peak of Passion, which was released in 1992. A year later, he directed A Warrior's Tragedy, his first film. Cheung played Guo Jing from The Legend of the Condor Heroes in 1994, boosting him to be one of the world's most popular actors at the time. In 1996, he appeared in the TVB hit drama Cold Blood Warm Heart, which received him slewing accolades of his appearance, made him a household name, and expanded his career in Hong Kong's entertainment industry.
He morphed into movies like Perfect Match and Comic King after the introduction of Cold Blood Warm Heart. He returned to televisionB in 2000 in the series Return of the Cuckoo, which had a huge success with Charmaine Sheh, with a high of 40 points. His fame and esteem as an actor has soared to countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, and China. He also received two awards in the televisionB award ceremony (My Favorite Couple and My Favorite Themesong) adding to his collection of victories. He received My Favorite Leading Character again in 2003 for his role as Yeung Kwong of Take My Word For It. At the 2005 Astro Awards in Malaysia, his role with Charmaine Sheh in the 2004 drama Point of No Return also earned the pair the Best Onscreen Couple award. Cheung has also found success in the mainland entertainment market, appearing in Ni Shui Han, Lu Xiao Feng, and Red Powder.
In 2012, he returned to TVB to film sequel to Triumph in the Skies, a television broadcasting drama by the 2003 blockbuster television drama. Captain Koo's service has increased his fame once more, winning him a spot in the people's hearts.
