Biography and career

Nunes was born in New York to a musical family. Her father is a pianist and a composer of children's songs. One grandfather was a composer of Portuguese fado music, and the other a jazz pianist. Nunes began piano lessons at age seven before moving to the guitar in her teens. At age 14, she began writing songs and playing the ukulele in 2005. She also plays guitar and melodica. Nunes has revealed that she holds dual citizenship in the comment section of one of her YouTube videos (see below).

Nunes is best known for her YouTube videos. Among them are original songs as well as covers of some of Nunes' favorite bands, including Say Anything, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Destiny's Child. Her original songs have been featured on YouTube's main page twice, under the tag 'jaaaa'.

Molly Ringwald played the ukulele on Good Morning America (June 30, 2008), after seeing Julia Nunes on YouTube, she took up the ukulele. "I've always wanted to play the ukulele, and she's completely inspired me," she said.

Nunes appears in a YouTube cover video of "Some Nights" by fun, as well as members of the band Walk off the Earth.

Nunes covered Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like" with the funk band Scary Pockets in 2017.

Nunes made her television debut on Conan on January 24, 2012, when she appeared on "Stay Awake."
