Haim (HY-im, stylized in all caps) is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles.
Este Haim (bass guitar and vocals), Danielle Haim (vocals and guitar), and Alana Haim (guitars, keyboards, and vocals).
Each member is also proficient in several other areas in addition to their primary instruments.
The group's pop sound on their studio recordings stands in contrast to their live shows' more experimental rock-based music. The sisters grew up in a musical family and began playing instruments from an early age in the cover band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna.
Este and Danielle, two elder sisters, began performing with Valli Girls in 2005.
Under that banner, they did a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums, but they departed the company shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
Haim was founded in 2007 with younger sister Alana, but they didn't fully consider it a career for some years.
Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012 after Danielle became a popular touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and then with Julian Casablancas. Forever (an EP that was limited-time download) was the group's first release, as well as a positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, which culminated in a collaboration with Polydor Records and a management agreement with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012.
Days Are Gone, the band's first album, was released in sessions between touring dates, as well as appearances at the Glastonbury Festival.
The album debuted in the top ten in several countries, including the number one in the United Kingdom, and the group had received numerous "best of" awards by the end of 2013.
At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, the group was selected for Best New Artist.
Something to Tell You, the band's second album, was released in July 2017.
Early life
Danielle Sari Haim was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, California, to a Jewish family. Mordechai ("Moti") and her mother Donna were both musical; although Moti had been a professional soccer player in Israel, Moti also played drums, and Donna won a competition on The Gong Show in the 1970s performing a Bonnie Raitt song. Although Danielle demonstrated a natural talent for the guitar at a young age, Moti made the decision that Este would be more suited to the bass, buying her a secondhand Fender for $50.
Personal life
Danielle has previously dated musician Blake Mills. She is in a relationship with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, who also produced all three Haim's albums. After being diagnosed with cancer, Haim's first song, Summer Girl, was written for Rechtshaid.
Career
Danielle began playing guitar at an early age and was encouraged by her parents to play the guitar. She appeared as an infant in a band called Rockinhaim, which was made up of her parents and her two siblings. The band played mainly classic rock covers. Danielle and her older sister Estere were asked to join the Valli Girls, a pop group that had performed well with their parents and then formally signed to Sony Records in 2004. Gibson guitars' Danielle was also given a product endorsement contract. Although later stating that this group was not a good platform for the kind of music she wanted to play, Danielle's band did have some commercial success. The group produced promotional videos, an unreleased album, and their song "Always There in You" was featured on the soundtrack of The Traveling Pants in 2005.
Danielle performed guitar with Jenny Lewis (1909-09 on guitar), and Julian Casablancas (2009-10) on guitar, and briefly for CeeLo Green in June 2010. On July 4, 2008, Jenny Lewis was introduced to Jenny Lewis by a friend of Jenny Lewis, who invited Danielle and Este to a jam session/partie at Lewis' house. Lewis saw Danielle's on drums and later asked her to tour with her as a guitarist. Julian Casablancas saw Danielle perform on that tour, and he asked her to be a member of his touring band, which began two days after ending Jenny Lewis' tour. Danielle appears in Casablancas' official music video "11th Dimension." Danielle decided she'd much rather perform on stage with her sisters when on tour with other acts. Danielle formed Haim, a three-piece band that appeared on the road with other bands for two years.
Danielle and her siblings formed Haim, a nameless band of their own. In 2012, they released Forever, an EP, and they appeared at numerous music festivals, bringing them to Jay-Z's attention. They were later signed to Roc Nation and were one of the featured performers at Jay Z's Made in America festival.
In September 2013, Haim's first studio album titled Days Are Gone was released. Haim's second studio album Something to Tell You was received with rave reviews in July 2017. Haim's third studio album Women in Music Pt.III was released in June 2020 to widespread critical acclaim. At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021, the album received awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance.
Danielle performed as the drummer for one song at a San Francisco concert in August 2014. Brandon Flowers, the Killers' lead singer, told the crowd, "We have a cool, special surprise guest." Haim was one of the bands that came out and dropped a record on us in 2013 and gave us hope for those that loved music. Danielle, the Haim singer, is actually a hell of a drummer."
