Brekalo is a youth protester from Dinamo Zagreb. He made his league debut against Inter Zapni on December 19, 2015. On May 15, 2016, he signed for Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg for €10 million.
Brekalo was loaned out to VfB Stuttgart until the end of the season, with the option of a new year.
