Vida and Ognjen Vukojevi celebrated Croatia's World Cup victory over Russia by yelling "Glory to Ukraine!" "British people are used to this word." In any way, FIFA's disciplinary code has outlawed political, nationalist, and racial slogans. "I like Russian people," Vida later said. It was just a jumble." Following Croatia's victory over 2018 World Cup hosts Russia in the quarter-finals, Vida, the Croatian international and current assistant coach, Ivica Oli, was caught saying, "Belgrade is burning." In Croatia, the rabic language is used. Belgrade was the name of the tavern in Kyiv, where they used to hang out, and it turned out that it was not the one they used to hang out. The incident was largely ignored by Aleksandar Holiga, the editor of Croatia's website Telesport, who said, "I don't believe Vida understood the full meaning and context of what he said." Both of them were just doing it because they are so close to Dynamo Kyiv. Fans will chant "politically, Croatia doesn't have a positive working relationship with Russia," but "who does in the rest of Europe?" "Ukrainians accused FIFA of defending Russia and flooded the football body's Facebook page with tweets of "Glory to Ukraine," the BBC reported. Vida said he was mistaken and apologized to Russian people in an interview in Moscow on July 11th.
