Johnny Lever Janumala (born 14 August 1957) is an Indian film actor and one of India's most well-known comedians.

Lever is one of India's first stand-up comedians. Lever has received thirteen Filmfare Awards for Best Performance in a Comic Role, and he has twice been nominated for his performances in Deewana Mastana (1997) and Dulhe Raja (1998).

He started his career in 1984 and has appeared in over three hundred Bollywood films.

Early life

Lever was born in Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh, on August 14, 1957, in a Telugu Christian family. His father worked as an operator in the Hindustan Unilever plant, where he also worked as a labourer for six years. In Mumbai's King's Circle district, Lever was brought up. His mother tongue is Telugu, and he is fluent in Hindi, Marathi, English, and Tulu. He is the eldest in the family, which includes three sisters and two brothers (including his younger brother Jimmy Moses).

Lever attended Andhra education society English high school until the seventh grade, but he was unable to study further due to family financial difficulties. He dropped out of school and began selling pens on Mumbai's streets, imitating some famous Bollywood celebrities of the time and dancing to Bollywood artists' songs. He spent his early years in Yakutpura, a former city of Hyderabad, where he learned the unique style of comedy acting.

During a Hindustan Unilever company function, he imitated a few senior officers, and from that day on, the staff announced themselves to be Johnny Lever. When he later joined film, he decided to use Johnny Lever as his screen name.

Personal life

Jamie and Jessy were born in 1984 and married Sujatha Lever. Jimmy Moses, his younger brother, is also a comedian and mimicry performer.

Lever, a Christian, is a believer. When asked about his switch, Lever replied: 'I'm a student at the University of Lever's.

Career

He began doing stand-up comedy in musical revues (orchestras), Tabassum Hit Parade, and after gaining success, he joined the Kalyanji-Anandji group, a music direction duo. He was already giving stage appearances before joining Hindustan Unilever. He left HUL in 1981 due to his increasing absenceeesm and since he was earning handsomely from stage shows. He did a number of shows and world tours with them, one of his first big tours with Amitabh Bachchan in 1982. Actor Sunil Dutt discovered his talent and potential and lent him his first film Dard Ka Rishta at one of his performances.

Hasi Ke Hangame, a comedy cassette, made him popular at home via the audio mode. He also did a few commercials for Kachua chhap incense, directed by Shekhar Kapur during this period. He appeared in Hope 86 in 1986 as a filler in a charity show Hope 86 in front of Hindi film industry members. His talent was recognised, and producer Gul Anand and Naseeruddin Shah co-produced the film Jalwa.

Lever received his first break in Tum Parhum Qurban, in which the legendary TV and stage co-star and yesteryears actress Baby Tabassum introduced her son Hoshang Govil as the leading man, and then in the film Dard Ka Rishta, thanks to Tabassum and late Sunil Dutt. Since then, he has appeared in more than 350 films, including Tezaab, Kasam, Khatarnak, and Kishen Kanhaiya. After Dard Ka Rishta, he was seen with Naseeruddin Shah in Jalwa, Hero Hiralal.

Baazigar was his first big success, and after that he was seen in movies as a supporting actor/comedian. Despite being occupied with his film appearances, he continued to do live shows. Michael Jackson's impersonation at the 1999 Filmfare Awards was one of his most memorable live performances. In the film Baazigar, directed by Abbas-Mustan, his most well-known role was the character of "Babulal." He is also known for some of his other well-known characters, including "Chotta Chattri", "Aslam Bhai," etc.

He appeared in a Tulu film called Rang. In 2011, Anbirkku Alavillai was released in his first Tamil feature film. Gara, also appeared in a Kannada film.

In 1993, Lever's first appearance in an episode of sitcom Zabaan Sambhalke as Johnny Utolandand. In his own show, Lever appeared on Zee TV, as well as Johny Aala Re. He appeared on the stand-up reality television show Comedy Circus in 2007. In 2017, Lever became the first Commissioner of Partners in Googol Chatterjee.

He is the president of MAAM (Mimicry Artist Association Mumbai) and has appeared on thousands of television shows around the globe.
