Life and career
Courtney was born in Garfield Heights, Ohio, on January 31, 1957, and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, as the eldest of seven brothers. Courtney was determined to be a filmmaker from the start of the school years and made short films from fifth grade to college. In 1981, he majored in journalism at the University of South Carolina and later moved to California to pursue acting.
He began working at Universal Studios Hollywood as a tour guide before being cast as Conan in the park's Conan the Barbarian live show. Courtney brought his martial arts experience to the position, which called for heavy falls and sword fights; he sustained multiple injuries throughout his appearances. Courtney met actor Brian Thompson and stunt manager Alex Daniels, who helped him to break out as a stunt performer at Universal Studios. Stella Adler taught him acting lessons at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as well as acting lessons.
Courtney made his film debut in 1989 in The Freeway Maniac and then continued acting until 2002. He gained more prominence in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Killed by Death" in 1997.
In David Gordon Green's horror film Halloween, the 2018 sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 film of the same name. Green asked stunt manager Ron Hutchinson whether he knew someone who was "6-feet-3, 200 pounds, and in his 60s," Hutchinson advised Courtney. Green outlined to Courtney his vision for Myers' demeanor, an amalgamation of Nick Castle's appearance as the protagonist and the introduction of a feline style of movement, which Courtney related to by following his pet's movements. He used Carpenter and Castle's work on the original film to explain how the forty years that transpired between the films would have an effect on the character.
The casting of Castle in December 2017 was widely reported, with Courtney only doing more as the character. However, in a 2018 interview, Courtney said that Castle's screentime was limited to a single cameo and that every scene under the mask was done by himself, as well as the scene where he shares with Castle, which leads to the confusion over why Castle's return had been misrepresented by the production.
In Warren County, Kentucky, Jim Jude Courtney Day was officially declared on October 19, the film's United States opening day, in honor of Michael Myers' portrayal. In January 2019, Courtney was named Best Actor at the 2019 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards alongside Castle for his work in Halloween.
Courtney reprised his role in the film's 2021 sequel, Halloween Kills, for the third time in 2022's Halloween Ends, earning him the distinction of being the actor to portray Myers the most times.
