Playing career

Klingberg began his career in Lerums, BK, at an early age; he was accepted as a youth to join the Frölunda HC programme. On September 21, 2010, he made his Elitserien debut for Frölunda HC against AIK.

The Dallas Stars announced on May 16 that they had signed Klingberg to a three-year entry level deal on June 16, 2011. He was then loaned to the Finnish SM-liiga to play with Jokerit in the 2011–12 season before returning to Sweden midway in the season to Skellefte AIK.

Klingberg spent his 2013-2014 season on loan with Frölunda HC, bringing a career high 11 goals and 28 points in 50 games. Klingberg was drafted by the Texas Stars' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate and played in three regular season games following post-season elimination.

Klingberg stayed with Texas for the year in his first full North American season in 2014-2015. He made his NHL debut in a 4–3 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on November 11, 2014 after being recalled by the Stars. On November 20, 2014, Klingberg scored his first NHL goal against the Arizona Coyotes' Mike Smith. In 2014–2015, Klingberg came in first in points among all rookie defenseman, and was named to the NHL all-rookie team.

The Stars qualified for the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs. They beat the Minnesota Wild in the first round before losing to the St. Louis Blues in the second round. In 13 games, Klingberg had one goal and three assists.

Klingberg and teammate Tyler Seguin were selected to the 2018 NHL All-Star Game after ranking first among NHL defensemen. He ended the year with a career-high 67 points in 82 games.

Klingberg underwent hand surgery on November 9, 2018, sidelining him for at least four weeks. He returned to the Chicago Blackhawks on December 20th in a 5–2 loss. Despite missing a total of 18 games, Klingberg scored ten goals and 45 points.

Klingberg scored the series-winning overtime goal in game six against the Nashville Predators in the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Klingberg, a free agent from the Stars, signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks on July 29, 2022.
