Life and career
Gourley was born in 1981 in Willow, Alaska, to John T. Gourley and Jennifer Van Ingen. He and his two children grew up in Alaska, going from town to town, where their father's construction company employed their family. Both Gourley's parents competed in the Iditarod, and the family lived in a small "off the grid" cabin that could only be accessed by dogsled for a while. He grew up helping take care of hundreds of mushing dogs.
He attended Wasilla High School but left at age 15 to study at home and work in construction with his father. In 2002, Gourley joined four Wasilla musicians, including Zach Carothers, and three others of band Nice Guy Eddie (Dewey Halpaus, Joe Simon, and Nick Simon), to form the punk band Anatomy of a Ghost. They toured around the country and on Fearless Records' site in October 2003, they unveiled their album Evanesce. On their first album, Odd How People Shake, Gourley recorded vocals for the song "Motelroom.Grandpiano" with the band Fear Before. Anatomy of a Ghost members wanted to explore their own ideas, but the group disbanded in May 2004. Gourley and bassist Carothers were born in Portugal. The Man.
In 2011, Gourley and her longtime partner and bandmate Zoe Manville had a baby.
