John Forté (born January 30, 1975) is an American recording artist.
He has released four albums.
Career
Forté studied classical violins, but he loved Vivaldi's work. He matriculated to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he graduated in 1993. Forté returned to New York City after high school, enrolling in NYU as a music business major, where he shared with rapper Talib Kweli before moving to Rawkus Records as an artist & repertoire executive.
Forté began his professional music career in the early 1990s when Lauryn Hill introduced The Fugees to the world. On their multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning 1996 album, The Score, he co-wrote and produced several songs. Forté, a 21-year-old boy, was nominated for a Grammy Award for his efforts on the album. With The Fugees, he went on tour around the globe, and Wyclef Jean Presents the Refugee All-Stars is a performance.
Forté partnered with former Fugee member Pras for the Top 40 hit song "Avenues" from the Money Talks soundtrack.
Poly Sci, Forté's debut solo album that was created by Wyclef Jean, was released in 1998. Fat Joe, DMX, 20 Grand Pikasoe, and Jeni Fujita performed on the album, and it displayed the same enthralling blend of street and mainstream culture that helped the Fugees break new ground. It was welcomed with critical acclaim but commercial disappointment stumbling under 100,000 copies, owing in large part to the fact that "the record's project manager left Sony Music a week before the album was released," Columbia Records' lack of funds behind its promotional tour. Spin called it "a passion between academia and street life that's completely absorbing."
Forté was arrested at Newark International Airport in 2000 after receiving a briefcase containing $1.4 million in liquid cocaine; he was charged with cocaine trafficking and conspiracy to export. After being found guilty, he was sentenced to at least 14 years in prison and placed in FCI Loretto, a low-security federal prison in central Pennsylvania.
Forté launched the well-received I, John, which was caught while waiting for the drug conviction. This album takes a more experimental approach to music-making than his debut. Herbie Hancock, Esthero, and Tricky appeared on the second album, as well as a duet with Carly Simon.
Forté's advocate, Simon and her son Ben Taylor, argued that he did not get a fair hearing; they fought for an appeal of the mandatory minimum drug regulations, which would remove a judge's discretion in a lawsuit. They learned about Forté through Taylor's cousin, who was a Forté classmate at Forté's Exeter. "Carly is a mentor to me, a tour guide, and essentially my spiritual guru," Forté said.
President George W. Bush commuted Forté's prison term with the help of Senator Orrin Hatch. On December 22, 2008, he was released from jail four weeks later.
Forté has performed over 50 songs and appeared over 100 shows since being released at Fort Dix, a federal Correctional Facility.
Forté made a cover of Kanye West's "Homecoming" shortly after his release from jail. Talib Kweli starred in "Homecoming" with Talib Kweli. He addresses the topics surrounding his prison time in the film. On January 17, 2009, the music video was posted on Okayplayer.com. He wrote numerous articles on TheDailyBeast.com in 2009, and Okayplayer.com interviewed him as he began his teaching position at the City College of New York in late March 2009.
Forté launched StyleFree, the EP, a body of work that provided social commentary as well as hope and inspiration in July 2009. It allowed his audience to witness a man's rebirth. In the film Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming, the single from the EP, "Play my Cards For Me," an audible reminder of his hip hop and R&B roots, was included.
Forté's work was on display at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2010, where he not only appeared at the ASCAP Music Café but also directed all of the opening festival trailers, had the end credit song in the film Night Catches Us, and collaborated with Joe Gordon-Levitt at hitrecord.org. Forté and his band were on a tour of K'Naan, Wale, and Tabi Bonney in the spring of 2010. In 2011 Le Castle, Forté's production company, was established to handle the various commissions that he has worked on in music, film, and other fields.
In February 2011, Le Castle conducted a 9-week tour of Russia. "Love from Brooklyn to Russia with Love" "The tour took Forté and his band, as well as bassist Brian Satz, percussionist Ryan Vaughn, and keyboardist Patrick Firth, from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan and Ekaterinburg, as well as other smaller venues along the Trans-Siberia Railway. Sunsay, Natasha Bedingfield, Evgeny Margulis, Billy's Band, Billy's Band, Billy's Band, Zero People, Emch Subatomic, Sergei Skrypka's State Symphony Cinema Orchestra, Romario, and others were among the artists with whom Forté collaborated in Russia. All proceeds from the tour were donated to local orphanages and the international foundations Operation Smile and Petra Nemcova's Happy Hearts Fund. Water Light Sound, Forté's first full-length album in ten years, will be released in September. The album features collaborations with international stars John Legend, Natasha Bedingfield, Talib Kweli, HD Fre, AZ, Colin Munroe, and Valerie June. In EA FIFA World Cup 2010, Dallas Austin's "Your Side" was one of the tracks featured.
In three vignettes, Water Light Sound will be available. After an exclusive Moscow performance on September 27, 2011, Sunsay, an acclaimed artist from Ukraine with whom Forté collaborated on the hit song "Windsong," the first vignette "The Water Suite" will be released to the world. Forté's promotional tour to Stockholm, London, Paris, and Casablanca will continue from Moscow to Forté. Over the next month, the two remaining vignettes will be unveiled.
Forté appeared on "NY Ink" in January 2012.
Forté created the theme song for the CBS News television documentary film series Brooklyn DA.
