Early life

André Lauren Benjamin was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 27, 1975, the only child of real estate agent Sharon Benjamin and collections agent Lawrence Harvey Walker. His single mother raised him in Atlanta, East Point, and Buckhead, where he attended Sarah Smith Elementary School, Sutton Middle School, McClarin Success Academy, and Tri-Cities High School. He was a childhood friend of Fonzworth Bentley.

Personal life

Benjamin was in a love with singer Erykah Badu from 1996 to 1999, and they had a son named Seven Sirius Benjamin (born November 18, 1997).

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) selected Benjamin as the world's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity in 2004 alongside Alicia Silverstone. He went on a vegan diet for 15 years before realizing that he was a "hardcore vegan for 15 years" in 2014. And raw? I've even tried raw. However, it was miserable socially. Musical career

Benjamin (who was then performing as André) met Antwan "Big Boi" Patton in high school. Benjamin and Patton formed Outkast, a combination of Benjamin and Patton. Outkast was signed to the Atlanta-based LaFace label and released their debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, in 1994, only after graduating. Outkast was named Best New Rap Group of the Year at the 1995 Source Awards, buoyed by the success of single "Player's Ball."

Outkast experimented with their music on their next two albums, ATLiens (1996) and Aquemini (1998). A return to traditional black music genres influenced the albums, with funk being the most prominent example. Outkast's style and lyricism have received renewed attention in terms of commercial and critical acclaim. Benjamin's lyrics, in particular, were noted for their surreal, futuristic, and remarkably strange, rare, or peculiar persona projected by André 3000 give the possibility to transcend the more common stereotypes of gangstas and pimps, which black men rap artists so often assumed by black men rap artists." Benjamin played guitar, painting, and a musing with singer Erykah Badu during the recording of these albums.

Stankonia (2000), Benjamin's fourth album (largely to distinguish himself from Dr. Dre and his new persona after his break with Badu) and raised the group's crossover appeal with the single "Ms. Jackson," which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written in the aftermath of Benjamin's breakup with Badu, and it was a fictionalized account of their marital breakdown. Outkast released Big Boi and Dre Present... OutKast, a best hits album from 2002, one of which, "The Whole World," received a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
