John Flansburgh Life

John Conant Flansburgh (born May 6, 1960) is an American musician.

He is one half of a long-running Brooklyn, New York-based alternative rock band They Might Be Giants, which performs, sings, and plays rhythm guitar. He is married to singer Robin Goldwasser, with whom he appears on occasion. He is commonly described by the name Flans or Flansy.

Early life

Flansburgh was born in Lexington, Massachusetts. Earl Flansburgh, his father, was a well-known Boston architect. Polly Flansburgh, the founder and president of Boston By Foot, is his mother. Brigadier General Ralph Hospital, her father, was an artillery commander in the United States Army during World War II. Paxus Calta, brother of Earl Schuyler Flansburgh, is an anti-nuclear protester and political organizer.

Flansburgh studied at George Washington University, where he learned to play guitar while working as a parking garage attendant, then onto Antioch College and Pratt Institute, where he earned an arts degree.

Flansburgh co-founded They Might Be Giants with longtime friend John Linnell in 1982 as a Pratt University undergraduate. Flansburgh plays guitar and songwriting duties, in addition to playing a variety of instruments as the occasion arises. He was portrayed in the 2002 film Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns as being a leader of the organization, directing the majority of the company's internal operations and handling a large portion of the promotion process.

Flansburgh, a composer, is a fan of a variety of styles; many of his songs have an absurdist and satirical bent, but he does have a penchant for more serious and romantic themes as well. He penned and performed vocals on the group's first Grammy Award-winning effort, "Boss of Me," which charted in Europe and served as the theme song to the hit television series Malcolm in the Middle.

Personal life

He has been married to singer Robin Goldwasser, with whom he appears on occasion. Flansburgh supports Bernie Sanders for President and has expressed his sympathy for him. Flansburgh is left-handed.

Flansburgh's ride was involved in a collision involving a drunk driver on June 8, 2022, while riding a ride share home from a They Might Be Giants show at the Bowery Ballroom. Flansburgh had several broken ribs, some of which had multiple fractures, but no vital organs were involved. On Twitter the next day, bandmate John Linnell released a tweet.
