John Adegboyega (born 17 March 1992), better known as John Boyega, appeared in the 2015 film Finn in The Force Awakens and its 2017 sequel Star Wars: The Last Jedi, respectively the seventh and eighth films of the Star Wars franchise.
Boyega made his name in the United Kingdom as Moses in the 2011 sci-fi comedy film Attack the Block, and he came to fame in his native country. Boyega's other credits include historical drama film Detroit (2017), science fiction film Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), four episodes of the television series 24: Live Another Day, and the dramatic Dreams (2014).

Early life
Boyega was born in London's Camberwell district and grew up in Peckham. Abigail (a carer) and Samson Adegboyega (a Pentecostal minister) are both of Yoruba descent. He has two older sisters.
In a play at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School, his first acting role was as a leopard. He was discovered by Teresa Early, the artistic director of Theatre Peckham, a learning theatre for young people in south London, while in another performance at age nine. From the age of nine to fourteen, he spent his time outside of school hours. In an interview with Sam Sanders on Fresh Air, there was a rumor that his father wanted Boyega to become a minister as well, but Boyega denied it, saying that his father supported his artistic interests. Damilola Taylor was alive for two years, but they were friends and the Boyegas helped him keep him alive.
Boyega began his secondary education at Westminster City School, where he had been involved in various school productions from 2003 to 2005. He attended South Thames College's Wandsworth campus from 2008 to 2010, studying for a National Diploma in Performing Arts. He was involved in the college's production of Othello as a trophote. He enrolled at the University of Greenwich to study for a degree in film studies and media writing but had to refocus on his acting career. He studied at the Identity School of Acting in London and became a patron of the Los Angeles branch when it opened in 2018.
Career
Boyega enrolled at the Identity School of Acting in Hackney and appeared in Six Parties at the National Theatre and Category B at the Tricycle Theatre before being invited to appear in Attack the Block, 2011. Boyega had been cast in the boxing drama pilot Da Brick, which was loosely based on Mike Tyson's life. Boyega was supposed to play Donnie, who was released from a youth detention facility on his 18th birthday and begins to investigate what it means to be a man. The pilot, written by John Ridley, was not picked up by HBO. Boyega appeared in Junkhearts as Jamal, a drug dealer who discovers some firearms and tries to sell them.
Boyega was selected by Fionnuala Halligan of Screen International as one of the "UK Stars of Tomorrow 2011" and appeared on the magazine's July 2011 issue with two other celebrities. He appeared in the film version of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's book Half of a Yellow Sun in March 2012.
Boyega was cast as a central character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, on April 29, 2014. Finn, a stormtrooper for the First Order, was later confirmed to play Finn, who, after witnessing their cruelty, left the military service and joined the resistance against them. Boyega appeared in Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow's film about the 1967 Detroit riots, and he reprised his role as Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017.
Boyega formed Upperroom Entertainment Limited in January 2016. (With Legendary Entertainment) Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to the 2013 film Pacific Rim in which he appeared in the lead role of Jake Pentecost, was produced by his company. He teased his forthcoming partnership with writer/director Sebastian Thiel, with whom he is collaborating on a series based on their childhood experiences, with Boyega producing.
Boyega would appear in a novel adaptation of Hold Back the Stars in November 2018. In Steve McQueen's miniseries Small Axe, he has also appeared.
In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Boyega once more reprised his role as Finn. (2019). In an interview on Good Morning America, he confessed to inadvertently leaving his script in a hotel room while filming. It was purchased by a Lucasfilm employee to prevent it from being leaked when it first appeared on eBay.
Boyega said he would be too old for the role and that he would be interested in seeing a newcomer receive it in reaction to a tweet urging him to play the DC Comics character Static in a live action role. He did, however, express an interest in playing Red Hood, the DC character.
Boyega was ranked in the top 100 of the most influential people in the United Kingdom of African/African-Caribbean descent in the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Powerlist.
