Douglas Booth Career

Career

Booth's first professional appearance was in the children's adventure film From Time to Time (2009), directed by Julian Fellowes and starring Maggie Smith and Timothy Spall. Following the film's release, Booth has joined the UTA talent firm for American-based representation. Prince Eustace appeared in the Channel 4 miniseries The Pillars of the Earth (2010), a medieval saga filmed in Budapest with Ian McShane and Donald Sutherland. Booth starred in several Mario Testino-shot campaigns for Burberry in 2009 and 2010, including Emma Watson, the autumn 2010 campaign with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Lily Donaldson's Burberry Sport fragrance campaign.

Following his success as the pop star Boy George in the BBC Two drama Worried About the Boys, Booth came to fame in 2010. He underwent a physical transformation for the job, shaving off his eyebrows and wearing heavy makeup. During recording, Booth met Boy George, with the singer remarking: "He just gets it." "There's something about him that reminds me of when I was 17." Ceri Radford wrote in The Daily Telegraph that Booth gave a "messifying" performance: "He presented a convincing portrayal of O'Dowd as a vivacious young man with a prickly wit and shielded his feelings with a sympathetic sex appeal and shielded his feelings with a prickly pace." "Moving, witty, he even got the singer's wheezy enunciation down pat," The Independent's Mike Higgins called Booth "a revelation."

On the BBC One version of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations (2011), Booth next appeared in the role of Pip, as well as Gillian Anderson and Ray Winstone. The miniseries, which aired over the Christmas season, was a huge ratings hit. "It's not that Douglas Booth was bad, it's just that one can't imagine Dickens ever intended Pip to be more beautiful than Estella, who, after all, was brought up to break man's hearts." Booth is described by New York Times President Mike Hale as "a CW-style actor whose beautiful visage says much more than puzzlement and petulance." The Los Angeles Times' Betsy Sharkey found the actor's appearance "dazzling," though Emma Jones of The Huffington Post dismissed the "debate over Douglas Booth's extreme prettiness, saying that "Booth's beauty is just a backdrop to Pip's naivety."

Booth also appeared in Christopher and His Kind, a BBC film that delves into novelist Christopher Isherwood's formative years in 1930s Berlin. Heinz, a German street sweeper who became Matt Smith's Isherwood lover, played Heinz.

In 2012, Booth starred alongside Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore in the teen drama LOL. During recording, he caught the paparazzi obsession with co-star Cyrus: "It was bizarre and, curiously, not at all glamorous." The film, which was shot in 2010, only received a limited theatrical release and unfavourable feedback. As part of Sky Arts' In Love With Dickens documentary later this year, Booth read selected extracts from David Copperfield; other contributors included Simon Callow and Miriam Margolyes.

In 2013, Booth starred opposite Hailee Steinfeld in Carlo Carlei's film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The Los Angeles Times' Betsy Sharkey praised Booth's memorable appearance: "It's not so much that he makes a great Romeo," Luhrmann's version said, but Irelli's was better in that... but it's been a long time since a camera has adored a portrait... If anything, the films in general are too fixated on reducing Booth to that singular feature when he is in fact a fine actor." Booth's R. Kurt Osenlund of Slant considered him to be "a rather impressive debut performance, giving a touching portrait of one of literature's greatest lovers." "And this is especially sad because Douglas Booth as Romeo is so good and could have been better if he had someone to play off of," Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle regretted. It's almost cruel to see him here, trying to inject emotion and humor into his scenes with Steinfeld, who is a blank wall." Booth's vocal range is very narrow, and he speaks in monotone," Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter remarked, "has a grasp of what he's saying and doing in a professional ladish manner." According to Claudia Puig of USA Today, Booth "more skilled" than Steinfeld "in the passionate intonation group," while The Independent's Geoffrey MacNab said that Booth "shows a certain star quality."

In Shem in Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic Noah, he appeared in March 2014. Emma Watson played his character's wife when she first visited Booth in 2009: "There's something old-mannish about Doug," she said at a Burberry fashion preview: "I have no idea how many years ago. He was a student at the University of Bath in New York. He knows who he is. He is not afraid of being threatened, doesn't hold back, and is generally fearless."

In the black comedy The Riot Club, directed by Lone Scherfig, Booth appeared alongside Sam Claflin, Max Irons, and Freddie Fox in September 2014. The ensemble piece, based on Laura Wade's stage performance, revolves around ten members of The Riot Club, an exclusive Oxford University dining club based on the real life Bullingdon Club. During the film shoot, Booth made "friends for life," and has described the characters as "beautiful." It's just discomfiting for the audience to be charmed by them, to love them a lot, and to see how far they'll go with them. He appeared in the Wachowski's science-fiction film Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, and Eddie Redmayne in February 2015. "They're just the most original people," Booth said of the Wachowskis. "They've created something really exciting and unique, as well as bonkers." In Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016), a Seth Grahame-Smith-inspired adaptation of the book of the same name.

In November 2017, Booth appeared in Loving Vincent, as Armand Roulin, one of the models for Vincent van Gogh's Roulin Family portraits. In the 2019 film The Dirt, Booth played Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx.

In the 2020 film My Salinger Year, Booth played Don, opposite Margaret Qualley.

When watching the first episode of the BBC1 series on Sunday night, dissatisfied Great Expectations viewers said they'switch over'. Many who attended Charlies Dickens' 1861 novel complained that it was too dark, had too much swearing, and was unrecognizable from the original story. The novel has been rewritten by Peaky Blinders creator Stephen, but those watching this version at home were unimpressed.
