Career
Joyner came to prominence after appearing Beth Nicholls in Channel 4 comedy drama No Angels between 2004 and 2006. Fanny Thornton appeared in four episodes of North & South as Fanny Thornton, as Lynda Moss, and in two episodes of Doctor Who as Lynda Moss. Joyner debuted in BBC One soap opera EastEnders in June 2006. Joyner initially turned down the role because she had reservations about whether she would be able to work in a soap opera. "It was a huge decision," she said. No such thing existed at the time, but I changed it to no. Playing someone in a soap is a huge responsibility. People are extremely protective of the soap, and if you are garbage, you can't get away from it." In addition, Joyner, who had worked quietly and profitably in the industry for eight years, was uncertain if she would be able to work on EastEnders. Joyner received the Most Popular Actress award at the 2008 British Soap Awards in 2008, as well as winning the Best Dramatic Performance at the 2008 British Soap Awards. Joyner was nominated for the Best Actress award at the All About Soap Awards in 2012 and later received the accolade. At the British Soap Awards in 2012, Joyner and co-star Jake Wood won the Best On-Screen Partnership category. Joyner was nominated for Best Female Soap Actor in the 2012 end of-year reader poll and came fourth with 13.4%.
Joyner appeared in EastEnders in 2011, but she was also seen as Jackie O'Sullivan in BBC One comedies Candy Cabs. Joyner would take a long break from EastEnders at the end of her current deal to spend time with her family, according to the newspaper on May 1, 2012. On April 1, 2013, Joyner's resignation would be indefinite as she continued to try new career paths. Joyner said of this: "I love playing Tanya and being a part of such a great show, but I've come to the conclusion that it's appropriate for her to step away from Walford for a bit longer than anticipated." I have been fortunate to have been part of some amazing stories over the years, and I have met some wonderful people during my time on the program, which I will always be grateful for, but I think that as a mother and an actor, I should try some other avenues for a while." Joyner appeared in her last scenes on May 15, 2013. On June 28, 2013, she left the show on June 28. In February 2015 and again on Christmas Day 2017, Joyner reprised Tanya's role in EastEnders as part of the storyline surrounding her on-screen daughters' departures.
In Channel 4's drama Ackley Bridge, Joyner began portraying Mandy Carter. In 2021, she debuted in the fourth series. She began to perform Luella Shakespeare in the BBC One comedy drama Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators in February 2018. Joyner appeared on Netflix's Stay Close as Erin Cartwright in December 2021. She is scheduled to appear in the Channel 5 drama series Riptide in 2022.
