Jess Barker (June 4, 1912 – August 8, 2000) was an American film actor of the 1930s and 1940s.

He is possibly the first husband of actress Susan Hayward.

Early years

Barker was born in Greenville, South Carolina.

Personal life

Susan Hayward was married on July 23, 1944. During their ten-year marriage, they had twin sons together, but Hayward gained custody after a bitter court fight.

Barker lost a paternity lawsuit in Los Angeles in 1956. Barker was the father of Morgana, a daughter born to actress Yvonne Doughty, according to judge Walter H. Odemar. He died as a result of liver disease.

Career

Barker began his film career as Philip Barker before converting his stage name to Jess Barker in the early 1940s.

Barker's film career was jeopardized due to the scandal surrounding a bitter custody dispute, but he did find work as an actor on radio and films in supporting roles. In Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street (1945) and the Abbott and Costello film The Time of Their Lives (1946), Barker appeared as an art critic. Perry Mason made two guest appearances on the program. In 1961, Walter Eastman appeared in "The Case of the Innocent Innocent," and in 1965, he appeared in "The Case of the Murderous Mermaid."
