Jennie Kim Life

Jennie Kim (Korean: 1996), born January 16, 1996, is a South Korean singer and rapper best known by the mononym Jennie.

She debuted with Blackpink, a girl group run by YG Entertainment in August 2016.

Early life

Jennie Kim was born in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, as an only child on January 16, 1996. She started attending Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul before heading to New Zealand. She and her family went to Australia and New Zealand when she was eight years old. When she asked her if she liked New Zealand and wanted to stay, she replied "yes"; a year later, she was sent to study at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland and lived with a homestay family. Jennie talked about her experience with a new language on the MBC's documentary English, 'To Survive (2005). She aspired to be a ballet dancer during her adolescent years. She enrolled at ACG Parnell College after completing intermediate studies.

Jennie first heard of K-pop while in New Zealand, with particular attention paid to YG Entertainment's music. Her mother wanted to move her to Florida at the age of 14 to continue her studies to become a lawyer or a tutor; however, she was afraid of not finding jobs she enjoyed while living alone. Her family supported her decision and she returned to South Korea in 2010 to Cheongdam Middle School. Jennie auditioned for YG Entertainment the same year as Rihanna's "Take a Bow" began, and the label's new recruit Jennie joined the company as a trainee. She told High Cut Korea that she was afraid of strangers and reluctant to take initiative, and that she could barely introduce herself at her audition. The company's founder, a vocalist, felt she should embrace the role of a rapper because the bulk of songs she covered included raps and she was the only one fluent in English at the time, as well as her native Korean; she also knows basic Japanese and French; and she's learned French.
