Early life
Jennie Kim was born in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, as an only child on January 16, 1996. She started attending Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul before heading to New Zealand. She and her family went to Australia and New Zealand when she was eight years old. When she asked her if she liked New Zealand and wanted to stay, she replied "yes"; a year later, she was sent to study at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland and lived with a homestay family. Jennie talked about her experience with a new language on the MBC's documentary English, 'To Survive (2005). She aspired to be a ballet dancer during her adolescent years.
