Smith was born in New York City, New York, on August 20, 1982. Smith has been acting professionally since the age of 6, appearing in local theaters in Los Angeles, where he was nominated for two NAACP Theatre Awards and named as a California Arts Scholar. Smith's first job in the industry was at the age of 12, and he appeared in an episode of the Fox sitcom The Sinbad Show. Smith majored in Theater Arts at SUNY Purchase. Career
Smith wrote, produced, and fully funded The American Dream, a drama for which he received the New Visions Award at Cinequest and Best Director at the Urbanworld Film Festival. Smith starred in Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins' most recent film. Smith appeared on NBC's Ironside and was a series regular on the Syfy Network's Stargate Universe. Smith wrote and directed The Son, a short film that premiered at Urbanworld, where he met programmer Brittany Ballard and decided to start Little Plow Films together. Smith co-wrote and directed I Want to Be Ready, Ayelet Waldman's best-selling book that includes a screen version of Daughter's Keeper, for which he holds the film/TV option. Smith's latest film, Wild Geese, is his first short film at international film festivals between 2013 and 2014, while his third feature, Steal That Horse, an original story he co-wrote, will co-direct and star in this fall. Smith has also published The Pyn, a satirical romp through the prison industrial complex, which he also plans to command in 2015. Smith teaches acting at Baldwin Hills Elementary School.
