Jack Rodwell Career

Club career

Rodwell was a member of Everton FC youth system, making his under-18s debut at 14 and his first appearance for Everton's reserve team at the age of 15. He began as wanting to be a top center back early in his career, but he was mainly deployed as a defensive midfielder once in the senior team. Lee Carsley was to blame for helping with the midfield position, according to Rodwell.

Rodwell continued to be the youngest player to represent Everton in Europe when he came on as a replacement against Dutch team AZ at the age of 16 years and 284 days, defeating the club 3–2. Rodwell appeared on his first day in the Premier League before returning as a replacement in the final match of the season, defeating Tim Cahill in a 1–0 victory over Sunderland on March 17 2008. He made three appearances in all competitions from 2007-08 to 2008. Rodwell was named Academy of the Year following this.

Rodwell was called up to the club's first squad for the pre-season tour in 2008-09 season. Rodwell made his first professional appearance against Blackburn Rovers on August 16, 2008, playing the full 90 minutes. He found his playing time was mostly from the bench at the start of the 2008–09 season. Despite this, Rodwell continued to fight his way to a spot in the starting eleven for the team. In the FA Cup against Aston Villa in February 2009, Rodwell scored his first senior goal for Everton. Manager David Moyes lauded his work after the match. He had just signed a five-year deal with Everton in the same month. Everton lost 2–1 against Chelsea in the FA Cup Final, with Rodwell appearing as an ineffective substitute. Rodwell made twenty-five appearances and scoring once in all leagues at the end of the 2008–09 season.

Rodwell made his debut in European competition against Czech Republic team Sigma Olomouc on Monday, earning the victory by two long-range goals and assisting Everton to a 4–0 victory. Rodwell started the game and helped the club draw 1–1, which culminated in the club's promotion to the Group Stage following a 5–1 win on aggregate. He began playing in the first eleven games before missing one match due to flu-like symptoms. Rodwell returned to the starting lineup against Stoke City, who was playing the entire game in a 1–1 draw on October 4th, 2009. However, he sustained a minor muscle injury during a 3–2 loss to Hull City on November 25, 2009, resulting in him missing two games. As Everton defeated BATE Borisov 1–0 on December 17, 2009, Rodwell suffered a hamstring injury and was suspended in the 8th minute. He was hospitalized for two months due to the injury.

Rodwell returned from injury following a two-month absence, defeating Chelsea 2–1 in a 2–1 victory. In Everton's 3–1 victory over Manchester United, he scored his first Premier League goal in a follow-up match. Rodwell was named Man of the Match after the match. In a 5–1 win over Hull City two weeks later, he scored his second goal of the season. Rodwell was regularly used in more attacking midfield positions in the second half of the 2009-10 season. Despite suffering another injury in the 2009-2010 season, he made thirty-six appearances and scored four times in all competitions. Rodwell also signed a five-year contract extension with Everton at the end of the 2009–2010 season.

Following intense competition in the midfield positions, Rodwell said he would fight for his spot in the first team in the 2010–11 season. In a 5–1 victory over Huddersfield Town in the third round of the League Cup, Rodwell scored as well as setting up the club's third goal of the season. However, he sustained an ankle injury that kept him out for three months during a 1–0 loss to Aston Villa on August 29, 2010. Rodwell returned from injury on November 14th, playing as a second-half replacement in a 2–1 loss against Arsenal. Rodwell found himself in and out of the starting eleven over the 2010-2011 season after recovering from injury. Rodwell's performance fuelled rumors that he had negotiated an agreement to join Manchester United, a skepticism that was denied by Manager Moyes. Despite being sidelined on two occasions during the 2010–11 season, he went on to make 20-eight appearances and scoring once in all leagues.

Rodwell stayed as a first team regular throughout the 2011-12 season by playing in the midfield position. According to the BBC, this lasted until he was dismissed in the 23rd minute during the 216th Merseyside derby on October 1st for Suárez. The FA called his red card back to him just short of it. Rodwell made his 100th appearance for Everton, including the entire game, in a 3–1 loss to Chelsea on October 15th. In a 3–1 victory over Fulham in a follow-up match, he scored his first goal of the season as well as setting up the club's first goal of the season. Rodwell recovered but his recovery was short-lived after he sustained a hamstring injury that kept him out for two months. In a 1–0 victory, his return to Tottenham Hotspur came on March 10, 2012, when he was activated as a 65th-minute replacement in a 1–0 victory. He suffered a modest recurrence of his hamstring injury that eventually ended his time with him for the remainder of the 2011–12 season. Rodwell made seventeen appearances and scoring two times in all competitions between 2011-2012.

Rodwell signed a five-year deal with Manchester City in August 2012, a price that may increase to £15 million. "I relish the chance of working with some of the best players in the world and continuing my growth," he said upon joining the club.

Rodwell made his first appearance of the season on Sunday in a 0–0 draw with Stoke City on September 14th. However, he found his first team opportunities limited due to strong competition in the midfield position. Rodwell was also concerned with his own injury. Despite this, he made ten appearances in all sports, five of which were league, making him eligible for a winner's medal when Manchester City became 2013-14 Premier League champions. Following this, Rodwell was expected to leave the club in the summer.

Sunderland revealed on August 5th that Rodwell had agreed to a five-year contract for an undisclosed amount that was expected to be about £10 million. He was uneasy about his stay at Manchester City and advised English players to consider twice before joining them.

Rodwell made his Sunderland debut in a 2–2 draw against West Bromwich Albion in the season's first game. He scored his first goal for the club on August 24, 2014, equalizing for Sunderland in their 1–1 draw with Manchester United at the Stadium of Light. He was sidelined between January and March due to injuries and suspension. Rodwell scored the equalizer in a 1–1 draw away from Hull City on March 3, his third goal of the season, though he was also banned for diving. Despite being on the sidelines on two occasions in the 2014–15 season, Rodwell continued to play in the first team. In all competitions, he made twenty-six appearances and scoring three times during the 2014–15 season.

Rodwell scored two goals and two assists in Sunderland's 6–3 victory over Exeter City in the second round of the 2015–16 League Cup on Sunday. He switched between a starting and a substitute role at the start of the 2015–16 season. Rodwell accepted to play in the position despite the club's defensive woes, as well as manager Dick Adaat's. However, this never happened, as Adaat was fired and replaced by Sam Allardyce, who refused to allow him to play. However, he had been sidelined on four occasions by the end of the year. Despite recovering from injury, Rodwell switched between a starting and a replacement role in the 2015–16 season. Rodwell scored in a 2–2 draw against Watford in the last game of the season. Despite being fit, he missed two games for the team. Rodwell returned to the first team in a 1–1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on October 1, 2016, as a 72nd-minute replacement. However, he sustained a hamstring injury that kept him out for the remainder of 2016. In a 2–2 draw against Liverpool, Rodwell came back to the starting lineup and played 65 minutes before being dismissed. Sunderland beat Crystal Palace 4–0 on February 4, 2017, snapping a drought of 1,370 days without winning a Premier League game in which he had started. He had wonless games in 39 Premier League games. Rodwell was both in and out of the starting eleven in the 2016–17 season after recovering from injury. Sunderland was eventually kicked out of the Premier League, according to the club's founder. He made twenty-three appearances in all sports after the 2016–17 season.

Despite Sunderland's relegation from the Premier League, Rodwell refused to take a cut, but the club were keen to sell him, but he stayed on the summer. In a 2–1 loss to Sheffield United on September 9, 2017, he scored on his first appearance of the 2017-18 season. Rodwell was dropped from the first team once more as a result of competition as well as his own injury concern. After rated him low on the results of the Evening Chronicle's poll, the club's supporters turned on him.

Rodwell, according to reports, pleaded for leave Sunderland in January 2018 after not making an appearance for the first team since September 2017.

Rodwell went on trial at SBV Vitesse but only to have it suspended due to "organisational reasons" reasons. After the January transfer window closed, Rodwell stayed at the club. When Sunderland were relegated for their second straight season in April 2018, boss Chris Coleman said he had no idea where the midfielder was physically impaired. The pair had fallen out and didn't have an eye to see as a result, and it was later revealed that they did not have a single eye to eye as a result. Rodwell made six appearances and scoring once in all competitions between 2017 and 2018.

His deal was terminated by the club on June 27, 2018. After leaving Sunderland, local newspaper Evening Chronicles was dissatisfied with the club's signing, even going so far as naming him as the worst signing in Sunderland's history, while the Northern Echo agreed.

Rodwell signed with Blackburn Rovers in the United Kingdom on a one-year contract, that will run until the end of the 2018-19 season. "It's important for me to get out and play football again," the club founder explained. Over the years, there have been ups and downs, but this has been in the past, and now I'm looking forward and focused on the future. After meeting the manager, I think it's an exciting team and a good match for me. He sold the team to me and came across really well. During my time in Everton, I've been to Everton and loved playing at Ewood Park, so I'm looking forward to playing in a Blackburn shirt now. After meeting the gaffer, I could tell him that he loves his job and is very passionate about the club. I can't wait to start playing under him."

Rodwell reverted to midfield in the next three matches following this. He made twenty-two appearances and scoring once in all competitions for the club after the 2018-19 season.

Following this, Rodwell was given a new deal with Blackburn Rovers. Despite being offered a new contract, he left the club at the end of his deal. Rodwell was linked to a move to Roma, but he was eventually not offered a deal after leaving Blackburn Rovers.

Rodwell joined Sheffield United in Premier League on a one-year deal until the end of the season. It came after he had been working with the team since December 2019. Manager Chris Wilder defended Rodwell following his appearance in the Netflix series 'Til I Die'.
